Here’s the short version: We’ve just launched the kickstarter for Tak.

Long ago, James Ernest and I were working on the Pairs kickstarter, brainstorming new stretch goals we could add to the campaign.

“We could agree to make Tak at some point in the future,” James said. (Note, I’m paraphrasing here.)

I didn’t want to do that.

“How about a stretch g...

Well, I wouldn't expect Patrick Rothfuss to write the app! My question was meant more as, "have you thought of hiring someone to write one for you?"

But I'm with you, Alejandro... waiting...waiting...

Patrick We have considered a mobile app. But creating a good one would cost a lot of money to create.

Given that, generally speaking, people don't pay for apps these days, it made a lot more sense just to focus on making the game itself available for people.

Patrick What's more, there's such joy to be had sitting down and experiencing a game with another human being.

Don't get me wrong. I love video games. I've played apps. They're convenient and fun.

But they're also solitary. I really want people to be able to sit down and enjoy this game with a friend. To talk and laugh. To feel the pieces in their hands and hear the sound of the pieces as they touch the board. To look at someone's face.

It's easy to forget it these days, but we are physical creatures. It is good for us to exist in the physical world sometimes. There is much joy to be had here, and that's where I think this game really belongs.

Isak I definitely agree that playing a board game is best done in real life. But I think having something like an app would be a great secondary way to hone your skills when you can't sit down and play. Also goo for those of us not blessed by many willing friends to play. That said I do not disagree with any of what you said.

People don't like paying for apps (and it's nice to share things freely), and putting adds in it would take away much integrity, so I can see why it would be hard to financially justify it.

That's why I think it would fit as a sort of collaborative free effort by enthusiasts.

That's true, but an app would let me play regularly with my mother, who lives in another state. That's what I really love about the internet and mobile technology. It connects people that otherwise could not be connected.
