That Song from Your Youth

If you were to pick one song
from the days long since past,
one piece of your generation,
what would you choose?

What does it remind you of?
Was it prom, the date that didn't meet
your youth's expectations?

Was it a melody you heard in your car
come day in and day out at the time.
Then suddenly vanished as the the world grew younger?

Was it a heartbreak?
A moment cemented in sadness by
another careless with love?

Perhaps it was just a song that stuck in your head,
at first dismissed as nonsense,
then, years later, refreshed as something new and original.

Let me give you mine.
I'll bury it with my memory:
