adam and mia and a third book

Okay. Just to make this crystal clear. And don't read this if you haven't read IF I STAY and WHERE SHE WENT because it's a spoiler. But I keep getting asked if there is a third book for Mia and Adam. And if you have finished WHERE SHE WENT, I have to ask you to ask yourself this:

Really?

Do you really want a third book?

I am so flattered that you ask. Am so flattered that you want to spend more time with the characters. But think about the ways books work. They operate on conflict. A third book would either be Adam and Mia in boring middle age. YAWN. Or I'd have to introduce some new conflict. You know, like give someone cancer. Would you want me to do that to them? Have they not been through enough already???!!!!

I love you all for asking. I love you all for wanting to be with them. You can always be with them in the pages of IF I STAY and WHERE SHE WENT or in your own imaginations. But the only reason I even wrote WHERE SHE WENT was because Adam and Mia were banging in my head, telling me that they weren't happy where I'd left them. They're happy now. They're quiet now. I'm happy for them now.

There are some other noisemakers in my head now. They have nothing to do with any of the characters in IIS OR WSW. They are totally new people. I hope to be able to tell you about them soon. I hope you will fall in love with them in a whole different way from the way you have with Adam and Mia.

Thank you for your awesome enthusiasm.

Nico This is wonderful news! I love IIS and WSW so much that I would hate to mess with the perfect place Mia and Adam were left in the last book. I love them so much I almost want to say, "Yes! Yes, I will read a book about their boring middle age!" But some things are better left in theory, aren't they? I can't wait to meet your new characters!

Sarah Thank you for this, Gayle! You left Adam and Mia at a good place.

Nicole I remember the day the book came out, another fan and I were talking (on Twitter) about it—I'd received mine already because I pre-ordered on Amazon with 2-day shipping, since they guaranteed it that day with that (and Amazon Student gives free 2-day shipping, but I digress), and she had pre-ordered hers from Barnes and Noble and they hadn't even shipped it yet.

But anyway, we tweeted about this very thing, whether or not you'd write another. She mentioned that you "said that the end will give us the answer" and my reply to that was this—"Having finished it…something tells me there won't be another. Would I mind another? No, but where/how it ends is a good spot. :)"— and I very much still feel the same way. Unlike after I first read If I Stay, with Where She Went the ending left me feeling like everything that needed to be resolved, had been, and that's the most important thing.

As a fan, of course, I wouldn't mind seeing very happy snippets of their future—but thinking of those is also part of being a fan and using our own imaginations after the fact, and so I completely understand why a third installment wouldn't be necessary, and could actually not work at all.

Thanks for writing these wonderful books, and I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

Charlotte My first thought when I saw the post title was NOOOOO..... What more could she do to them? I almost did not survive WSW. ;) I surly could not stay away if you did write more, but I was wholey satisfied with where you left them.

I get that people want to have more of them, but I think they ultimately hunger for more of a peek into thier future, just to know they are ok and maybe get alittle more of those amazing characters, than a whole new set of conflict. Be careful what you ask for people!
Kudos to you Gayle Forman for letting your characters be.

message 5: by Landy (new)

Landy To me WSW was a gift. I read IIS thinking it was a stand alone book, and thought where it left off was a a good ending. But been able to see what happened afterward and told from Adam's perspective was a real gift (I'm a sucker for books told by the male lead 1st person perspective).
I have to say that even though I don't remember shedding a tear for IIS even though is a real powerful and emotional book, WSW got tears on my eyes, I felt my heart break for Adam over and over again. I think you left them in a great place, and even though I would love to read more about them I know another book really doesn't make sense.
Now if you ever write a compilation of short stories I would love to see just a bit of Adam and Mia's life after the end of WSW.

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah When I saw this, I was like, "What?! Nooo." Because like you said another book means another conflict and the first thing that popped into my mind was will someone die now?

Thank you for not succumbing to your fans. Because even if I love If I Stay and Where She Went to the bones--I mean to spines, I would never want to see it butchered. And if EVER there will be a next book in the Mia and Adam ARC , the wait could probably kill me.

Lovelene Pearl Im sure gonna miss Adam and Mia. Great book though. :)

Amara Rose I am happy for the ending but it's a cliffhanger and it drives me nuts.

message 9: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Ok, seriously, there has NEVER been another book (and I have read quite a bit) where another character's pain becomes my own. Gosh, Adam - I just wanted to jump through the pages and give the boy a hug (and a xanax). I simply loved him. He was so loyal to Mia through her accident and recovery, and all he ever wanted was to be with her. He didn't care about fame/money, he just wanted his girl.

I know there will never be a 3rd book - but hey - like at the end of WSW where the audience is pleading Adam's case by repeating the chorus to his song while he makes his way to Mia - I gotta plead a case for a 3rd book for them :)

I agree they are left in a happy spot, but more in a happy spot in the sense that they are together. As individuals - they still have issues - that us as readers who have become so invested in them - would like to see them work through.

Adam - gosh, he loved music. Now, it seems to be a chore to him. He is unhealthily paranoid all the time, and really withdrawn. The rift between him and his band also made me sad. He really didn't seem to have anyone. I would love to see how/if he ever gets his love for music back - if he mends fences with his other band members - and functions normally (or well as normal as a celebrity can get) in society. He also is harboring some very deep grief feelings over the accident that I feel he never got to truly express that I still feel eat at him.

Mia - I feel like she ran away from Oregon, even though I know she really didn't. But, she didn't go back to visit - not even her family's graves - and I feel like her grief over the accident wasn't fully resolved. It would also be interesting to see how she handles being in the spotlight as Adam's gf/how she deals with the paparazzi because I am sure they won't just leave him alone just bc he quit the band/and how she handles the story of her accident being publicized, as I'm sure somehow a reporter would dig it up and leak it.

So, my case is more not that a new conflict be introduced, but, just to see them heal as individuals - because we love them separately as well as together as a couple.

Side note: Bryn's parts kind of made me think ....

The part where she said "you don't get to be the one upset - not right now" - the 'right now' threw me - why would he be upset w/her at any other time now or in the future? And when he said, "I hope you do better with the next guy" and she said "Ya, I wouldn't worry about that" and cackled.. I guess in a way I wanted more closure with them in the making sure she does NOT have a bump/not pregnant after all those bump references where made by reporters :)

Chase_evers I finished IIS a few days ago on the airplane. As soon as I got in the airport, I walked to the book store and got WSW and finished it in 2 days. It was so good and it was interesting hearing Adams perspective this time. Whenever I read a good book and get connected to the characters, I'm so sad that it's over. I would LOVE a third book. Except I think it should pick up right away instead of years later because in IIS they were closer to my age and I don't want them to already be middle-aged! It would be kind of cool if half the book was Mia's perspective and the other half Adam's. Maybe the plot would be about how Mia adapts to being in the spotlight as Adam's girl. But I just can't get over the fact that I don't know what happens next! -I can't wait for the movie! Please write a third book! Maybe called "how it was" or something. Just PLEASE. I love the books so much

Patricia Garner I am not a reader! I saw the trailer for the movie and decided to read the first book. As soon as I found out there was a second one I downloaded it it read since the library's copy was out. Read the entire book in one day! Did I say
I am not a reader?!? I would like another book and who knows if you would consider revisiting at a later date, kids getting married and they don't agree on the choice of spouse? Or as someone pointed out above, could be a hidden preg of Bryn's that at age 16 becomes a teen idol? Who knows, but I am happy with thinking they are living happily ever after right now with the normal relationship challenges! Thanks for that! I will be searching out some of your other books!

message 12: by P (new)

P Both were amazing books, Adam and Mia got a beautiful closure-- but you really can't deny us a /little/ pining for another book, can you? ;)

message 13: by Aishwarya (new)

Aishwarya Golechha I liked the way you ended the WSW book, but I thought that if you were too write a third book it could be a conflict that's not between adam and mia. Like he said he was going to qui the band. Maybe it could be about how he is trying to make his band feel like he's not betraying him. Mia could be supporting Adam (I still would want a big part for Mia.) And because I'm me and I love cheesy things the book could end in a proposal with her saying yes. That's what I thought could happen… but of course it's your choice.

message 14: by Ari (new)

Ari There still is a conflict Adam said he is NEVER getting married so are him and Mai just going to be girlfriend and boyfriend forever!!! I need to know

message 15: by Nerd4 (new)

Nerd4 I would like it if there was and epliogue so we then find out more about Adam and Mia but I think we do not need another book. But, yes certainly I would of liked an epligoue if Adam and Mia get married! But this series does make it in my Top 10 list! Well Done Gayle!!!

message 16: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Just go ahead and give Adam lung and/or oral cancer. First plain romance then Adam starts to suffer then he gets better then he gets sick again and dies, Mia suffers, goes through depression and then a slight Romeo and Juliet ending. Attempt at suicide- doesn't work, then she dies in a second car crash in a cab ride in New York to Adams grave for the third day in a row by recommendation of her therapist to attempt to ease her depression and let go, move on and live her life

message 17: by Shannon (new)

Shannon And they get engaged right before Adams death

message 18: by Ari (new)

Ari I think they need to have a baby and Then Mia getting really sick then almost dying again but Adam comes to the rescue

Aishwarya Golechha Shannon wrote: "And they get engaged right before Adams death"

no

message 20: by Brittney (new)

Brittney Was anyone else confused by the extra blurb after Where She Went called “Shuffle” ? This is why I went looking for a third book. That usually is what a blurb like this means, isn’t it?
