Fee Fie Faux

So I stumbled across this thing recently…

Even if you’re not a fan of Neil Gaiman, it’s worth watching. If you are a fan, it’s hugely funny. And if you’ve listened to Neil’s Audiobooks as much as I have (Which is to say obsessively) the above video is AMAZING.

My third time watching it, I started wondering, “Could we do something like this, but for my writing?”

At first I dismissed the thought as silly. For one thing, I don’t have Gaiman’s gorgeous voice and accent. I don’t think my writing...

Sheem If you did do something like that I'm sure it would be something worth listening to.

Sheem Also I was wondering, is Kvothe left or right handed?

Amber @Sashiimi (does that work on Goodreads?) I'm pretty sure Kvothe's right-handed. He plays a right-handed lute (I'm assuming that works the same as with guitars), and he talked about the left hand generally being more nimble, not his in particular. Adem hand-talk is all with the left hand as well, and swordplay is in the right, but Kvothe didn't seem to have any boon or impediment with either of these. Therefore I'd say he's right-handed. (Sorry for the ungrammatical rant)

I don't have a source available but I think he trained himself to be ambidextrous.

Shannon Wolf Something else to distract you from the next book in the series?! Dude, frustration is your middle name.

Ah okay thanks :)

Wow, it's almost as if Pat has interests that don't including writing and editing 24/7. Is he even allowed to get more than 6 hours of sleep? How dare he sleep when he could be working on book 3. And God forbid he finds a way to interact with fans that doesn't involve someone being an asshole about his work ethic.

Oh my god aren't you that user that makes a point to comment on every post asking where book 3 is

Nikki I could listen to Neil read those "bad" stories all day. Patrick, I think listening to you do the same performance would be highly entertaining! I would love to write a "bad"version of one of your stories for you to read!

Agreed. I mean, I get that he has all these other spinning plates in the air, but I'm starting to worry I will die before finding out how one of my favourite series ends.

That's kind of unnecessarily defensive. Nobody is saying he can't have other interests or sleep, it's just frustrating to wait year after year for news, while every post is about a new and different (time consuming) project than the one that made most of us follow him in the first place. It is perfectly valid to feel that way.

I was a Harry Potter nerd right from the publication of book 2 in 1998 to the final book in 2007, so I know what it is to be patient for more in a series and to wait years for a new book. But even when Rowling took a hiatus from writing for 2 years, she kept people informed and we knew it was just to stop her getting burned out, not because she wanted to focus on writing other things or producing board games or opening theme parks - most that stuff came later, the books and series always came first because she knew that was what people cared most about.

I admit I was one of the people thinking 'hey, chill out, it will come when it comes' when I read impatient comments, but it's been 6 years since the last book, so I think we can be forgiven for feeling frustrated when we read that yet more valuable time is to be taken up by more projects that are not the much anticipated Book 3...

Trust me I definitely understand the sense of frustration, but I usually keep it to myself instead of leaving comments on posts it doesn't pertain to. If all you want to hear about is news on Book 3 then maybe unfollow his blog? All his goodreads posts (aside from book reviews) are just crossposted from his main blog which isn't necessarily about Book 3, it's about his life. Complaining about it isn't going to make it come faster and maybe removing the option of seeing information you're not interested in will lessen your frustration. Out of sight out of mind, right? :)

message 17: by Linden (new)

Linden I'm with you, Cookie. People who care enough about Book 3 to be following the blogs have likely also followed closely enough to know that impatient comments only hurt and authors that struggle don't tend to work faster. Not that they write more slowly out of spite, but simply that it's harder to focus when you don't feel good. Pat works hard. If he's not writing, it's because the book's either awaiting feedback from editors or beta readers, or because it's in post-production, or because there's a need to come at it from a fresh perspective -- and side projects and side interests feed that fresh perspective. Get over yourselves. Impatience is natural. Bullying the author is not. He doesn't owe you anything. Frankly, in spite of how much I'm eager to read book 3 myself, given how every post gets a "mush -- we're waiting" response, I'd applaud him for finishing it and then just locking it in a vault until the day he dies. Refuse to release it until people stop poking him with a stick.
[end rant]

Chill. The. Crap. Out. There are god only knows how many other books to read. Let the man write in his own time.

I agree that he should write in his own time, it would just be nice to feel that it is still a priority for him, but his posts don't give any sense that it is, that's all. And sadly some people don't have the luxury of years to wait for these things, so I think they can be forgiven for feeling disappointed they may never see the end of their favourite book series.

Cookie wrote: "If all you want to hear about is news on Book 3 then maybe unfollow his blog?"

I only follow him on Goodreads because I want to be notified about his books. I don't really want to keep checking Amazon every week for 6 years to see if there is a publication date yet, I'd rather get an email that says the author has posted information about it.

I don't usually post comments (impatient or otherwise), but I read Shannon's post and 100% agreed with his sentiment, and felt that too many people were jumping all over him for daring to express his - and many others' - sense of frustration.

He isn't alone in feeling that way, and while you might think posting comments about it won't help, a couple of posts after six years saying 'hey, please tell us you're still progressing on Book 3 and haven't totally abandoned it so you can focus on all these other projects??' seems fair enough to me.

Julia Thanks for sharing this little Gaiman chuckle-nugget.

I love that he narrates his own audio books. I could, and have, listened to him all day. That voice.

message 22: by Sheem (new)

Sheem Forcing the writing out isn't going to make it any better, in fact it will probably just decrease his productivity and quality rate as is the way of the human mind.
