Failure to launch!

Hey guys,

I started a crowdfunding page to supplement my editing (and eventually marketing campaign) for this ten-book project.

As of today, the deadline has passed and it failed. I didn't really advertise except from within The Book of Beginnings. It wasn't a comfortable fit for me, but it was a learning experience.

So that's over with.

+++

But here's the real big news: I got my first one star review!

I know you're not supposed to respond to reviews, but I'm going to share what the experience was like.

First, I came home from vacation knowing that I might have picked up some new readers because of the price promotion I ran on the 11th. So I was excited! Yay, I had some new readers.

Then I went to Amazon to check the also-boughts on BoB... and there was the one star review.

You might not believe me, but I was actually relieved. Your support and enthusiasm has been so incredible, I think it inflated my ego a little too much. When I hit the publish button on an unfinished story, BoB, I was certain that everyone would throw torches at me. I was ONE HUNDRED perfect sure that my first handful of reviews were going to be one or two stars. (Too long! One star! Collection of short stories and not a novel! One star!)

But the opposite happened. Somehow, the book got in the hands of people who enjoyed it. And the response has been so touching that I started to think: 'hey, maybe you can write something that EVERYONE will like.'

Well, that was laughably idealistic, to say the least. A guy can dream.

I was a little surprised at how happy/relieved I felt to see that one star review. It was like I could go back to work without trying to make everything perfect for everybody. I mean, I'm still aiming for perfection, but I guess I relearned that lesson that never seems to stick: there's no way to make everyone happy.

Yesterday I drafted 5k and I'm well on my way to hitting that number today. Time to get to work and draft these last few books. Then edit. Then sleep. Free time: I'll see you in the fall.

:)

+++

Also, what the heck is the with auto-boughts on BoB? The top pairing is "His Cocky Valet" which I get... because #cockygate. But the first TJ Klune book doesn't appear until the last page! And thank goodness Adam Silvera is on there too! Silvera was the first auto-bought and I thought: 'this is a good match. I'm not YA, but I am writing a bit more of a narrative than a typical romance novel.'

But now 50% of the recommended books have nekkid male torsos on the cover (half of those seem to be headless). 25% have nekkid male backs, unusually flexing but one of them is bound by ropes and looks to be blindfolded. Oh joy.

That price promotion might have confused the auto-bots because now it's moving back to 'also-viewed' taking top priority... oops. I'll factor this into my decision for advertising Book One when it comes out.

+++

(Fun Fact: Once, I had a one star review on a book that wasn't even a review of my book! That drove me up the wall like you wouldn't believe!)

Oh, and happy Friday! I guess I'm in a good mood? Yeah, getting back in the writing routine feels pretty good.

Gabi LoL I just imagined a headless, half-naked Mark on the cover of The Friend. XD Oh, boy!
Dunno! I kinda like the covers the short stories have. They're not exactly eye candy, but they're personal. I like them.

I love those covers. They're the opposite of generic, and eye-catching in the best way.

Xia and the Giant TBR Covers like these, right?
Taxes and Tardis by N.R. Walker - Taxes and Tardis

Going Sasquatch (Finnegan & Morrow #1) by Jess Whitecroft - Going Sasquatch

Gabi The most important thing about covers is that they should reflect on the story.

You would think that this book:
A Walk Through Fire (Through Hell and Back, #1) by Felice Stevens
has something to do with firefighters, with all that smoke, and the 'fire' in the title. But no.
And okay, there's the blurb, which tells you what it's about, but still.

So if Chris would want to put a naked man on the cover (which I don't think he want's) that would go against the whole story. It might draw a crowd, but, yeah no.

Xia and the Giant TBR lol, I think it's going to be a cold day in hell when Chris will decide to put a naked man on a cover for his memoirs

annob [on hiatus] You must mean 'in Hell', Xia Xia ;D

OMG, OMG, that was a bullseye, Annob, if I ever saw one! Hahahahahhaa! True, true, I've meant "In Hell". :))))) You're awesome, Annob!

annob [on hiatus] :)

I do find the cover art discussion interesting though. It's so clear different genres has their own 'stereotypical' cover art look. If one compare the LGBT Memoir genre with the Gay Romance one on Amazon, the difference is pretty obvious. :)

Memoirs, majority focusses on text:

Romance, majority focusses on torsos:

Romances pretty much have looked like this since the days of Fabio, but it has to work well for sales otherwise they wouldn't be so frequently used by publishers and authors. I suppose undressed people looking sultry on a cover signal to the buyer what genre the story inside it is most likely to belong to. The tricky part is, regardless what style the publisher chooses, it is the first thing a reader is going to see. All covers are going to attract some readers and repel others.

Christopher Sullivan Thank you, Teal. This makes me want to have a watercolor for every chapter. But drafting comes first. 3k more done today, royal wedding and all.

@Gabi, Xia, Annob... It would be a cold day in Hell... but Mark would love it.

Cover Art: Yep, there's a pretty stark difference. Much less abs when you look at LGBT Memoir. :)

I'm thinking the ten books will all have the same "It's Just Us Here" with a smaller subheading for "The Friend", "The Companion", etc. And between the title and my name, there will be a Symbol from the story. For example, Book 6 might have an engagement ring. Book 9 would have lime green kid's glasses. Book 4 would have a gold necklace. Book 5 might have my grey 'nerd-chic' glasses. Book 2 might have a signed baseball, or a signed and framed jersey. Book 1 might have... probably the suit? But that's kind of a big item to put on the cover. Maybe Book 1 would just have a copper tie.

We'll have to see. I'll have plenty of posts to get your full opinions on cover art/layout.
