Why I Love Indie Bookstores

Hello Book Lovers:

John Grisham here, hiding on the farm in central Virginia, safe and secure. I trust you are too. Be careful out there.

Camino Winds was published recently, and normally I would be making the rounds, visiting stores to promote my new novel. But as you know, the world has changed dramatically in the past few months and almost nothing seems the same.

I had planned to tour with Camino Winds but that’s not possible now. With its prequel, Camino Island, I toured for the first time in twenty years and had a delightful time. I went to 25 bookstores and did all sorts of events with local writers. I enjoyed that, and I enjoyed meeting a lot of readers, but the most interesting part of the entire tour was hanging out in some wonderful independent bookstores. We have some great ones in this country, and they’re owned and run by dedicated people.

Independent booksellers view their stores as far more than retail outlets. They welcome debut authors on the road for the first time, and they welcome the literary stars for unforgettable readings. They host book clubs and story time for kids. They recommend the books they’ve read and loved, and they know the ones to keep away from certain customers. They host wine tastings, cooking classes, small concerts, recitals, and art fairs. Some have cafes, bars, and coffee shops. And the music – every store has its own sound and its own play list.

In many communities, the bookstore is the life of the town, the hub of commercial activity.

To booksellers, their stores are institutions that cannot fail.

They need your help, and we need them to stay vibrant.

Louise I have read your latest, Camino Winds. It is a rollicking read. Having seen your podcast with Stephen King I donated to BINC. I was thrilled to be able to listen to both of you and happy to donate to a very important cause. Unfortunately, there is no local bookstore in my town anymore. I would love to see one. Thank you for making readers aware of this organization. Looking forward to your next novel.

R. Bellon Thank You for your post. Farm in Virginia, sounds like "just the place". Very Grateful Here. By the way, ( your "buy more books" comment".) I own more books than furniture. All My Best.

Susan I totally agree with all the comments above. I have recommended the Camino books to friends. I love independent book stores! I too look forward to more books in this series. Isn't Virginia the most wonderful state! We lived there while my husband was in grad school at VT. Now one state below. Happy reading!

Dixie Dylla Instead of my normal amazon purchase for Camino Winds, I purchased online, from Square Books in Oxford. There’s no place quite like a bookstore, especially those independents. I miss them right now. For those looking for an Indy Bookstore, just Google. There are many currently offering curbside pickup and/or shipping.

Kuv Have you thought about writing a spy novel ?

A. Burdeos I have read quite a few of your books. The very first one was the Pelican Brief when it came out. I was in South Korea at that time. That got me started with your books. My favorites were The Pelican Brief, The Client and The Partner. I've also watched most of the film adaptations. If you have a book tour in England in the future, that would be something I'll look forward too. Keep writing
