My "Strength"...Isn't Exactly An Organized Office

A quick hello to you all and a heads up that I'm in two places at once tonight/tomorrow! It's my blog day on the Girlfriends Book Club, and I'm writing about something I've been pondering for a while...embracing not only our weaknesses but, also, our strengths.

Also, I'm a guest at Reader's Entertainment where my messy office space is being highlighted in their "At the Desk" feature. It was fun to share a bunch of pictures of my work area and be reminded that writing is, indeed, an exercise in chaos!! (At least at my house. ;)

For those of you who are writers, what is your workspace like?? Where do you do your best writing? Do you edit in the same location as you do your drafting, or do you have a different spot for each? For everyone, what's your favorite place at home to read?

Nancy LaPonzina I have a small studio I write in, but I must admit, it's not neat and tidy. Two stacks of books tower my swivel office chair ... one stack has research resources for whenever I forget the exact archaeological term I need for my novel, and the other, sources for formatting, agents, publishers, etc. And still another smaller pile containing my three "wisdom" guides for that particular story (per Heather Sellers). Oh yes, and I keep a book altar ... I create a mock-up of my novel cover and apply it to the front of any book close to the size of my to-be-finished novel and place it on a book stand. I add a candle, and other symbolic objects that synchronistically appear that reflect objects found in the story. I honor Asian influences, too by placing an orange on the altar and perhaps some other spices.

I take revision pages out of this space, generally to a comfortable sitting area or outside. And reading? I love to read in a comfortable big leather chair with my feet up on an ottoman, sunshine streaming in ... or outside under blue skies.

Marilyn Brant I love your descriptions of your reading and writing places, Nancy! I thought your "book altar" idea was an especially cool one :).
