Family Unit Is Back!

I have a funny story about writing the book Family Unit. Originally, I wanted to tell the story of mature men. I enjoy writing about teens, or college age students, I love describing firm six pack abs and the desperation of youth. But for once I wanted to give a shout out to mature singles, men who might be seen by the modern dating market as a little past their prime.

I talked to one of my best friends about it and we compared notes on the minute changes we'd noticed in our bodies — the ones we could chalk up to aging. My hair was greying, I needed reading glasses. When my friend (who is five years younger than I am) and I are in the yarn store, I have to hold a skein more than an arm's length away from her so she can read the dye lot. My skin is changing. I noticed I had pigmented and unpigmented spots on my hands. I don't consider myself old, or rather I do, but I don't think of myself as decrepit. I created the characters in this book and gave them all my age-related characteristics. I described those changes in what I thought was humorous detail and the number one response I got from readers was Wow! These guys are so OLD. It isn't something I feel like I should respond to or anything, but I don't see myself as all that old! The fact that I've had four kids may have fast-forwarded my aging clock a little, but anyway, this is a romance for the rest of us — those of us who aren't in the first blush of youth, because as I said in the dedication to my dear friend Mark C:

Let's just say I believe no heart is safe from Cupid's arrows as long as it's still beating.

Family Unit

A retired marine, Logan is methodical and conservative. Richard is a liberal pacifist who is pathologically afraid of guns. Yet the minute Logan sets eyes on Richard, his heart turns over like an old car engine and it isn't long before his motor is revved and Richard is in the driver's seat—even if it seems like each man is driving a different car.

Richard Hunter is parenting his grandson, and the kid— Nick—has had it rough. Richard vows nothing will stop him from creating a loving and stable home. Not even a tempting, red-hot relationship with a very attractive man. However, when Richard looks into Logan's blue eyes it's tough to stay focused. It's never easy to become a family, what with a temperamental eight-year-old, disapproving outsiders, and outright extortion attempts.

But when push comes to shove, both Logan and Richard are committed family men who want to make a loving home for a little boy who needs them. Together, they're planning to form a Family Unit, and they won't let anything stand in their way.

Family Unit is now out as a slightly revised e-book. You won't find it's very different from the original version, but I cleaned up some language and got a new cover from my pal Lex Valentine. I'm even going to release it for the first time in print as soon as possible, so stay tuned.

You can purchase it right now, at Amazon HERE.

Oco *lol* One of my favorite comments ever from a reader was in response to one of my on-line novels in which a fit sixty-ish year old man (silver fox) has sex. She wrote, basically, "ewww, just no. You should have left that out, it's very unsexy."

Ouch. :D

(I loved this book! -- ETA: Family Unit, I mean)

message 2: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper I love the book and I really love the new cover.

message 3: by Z.A. (new)

Z.A. Maxfield @Oco, I know. The closer I get to sixty, the more likely it seems like sixty year old people might actually do the nasty after all. I know of several people how are in their sixties and have epic love lives.

Me too. I love the books that deal with older characters and all their messy lives (jobs, kids, exes, parents). I think that is why I loved the Faith and Fidelity series so much. Family drama is interesting! What do the kids think when Dad all of a sudden falls in love with his best friend, and how does the parent deal with this as he is working on a new romantic relationship (which is hard enough as it is)? I loved Rebuilding Year for the same reason. Bring on the older characters, I say--lots of ideas and situations to work with.

message 15: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper My new story for the M/M group has the characters in their 80's by the end of it and still interested (although aches and pains would make it less athletic.) I admit I didn't put it on page. But I also love older characters - they are often more interesting as people. Admit One is another story with good older characters. And I do like kids in the mix. I love the boy Lex picked for this cover for Family Unit - just the right expression of sweet but not saccharine.

Kaje, that sounds wonderful. Emily, there is a list here that I found pretty useful. http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/60...

I think that is where I first read about Family Unit.

Me too, and the thing is I know Johnny Depp hasn't changed but he's like... Dorian Gray or something. The rest of us are aging, some (like me) more than others.

My best friend who is on the late side of her fifties and her very (seriously) hot 60-something year old boyfriend just had a tremendously hot four day weekend of romance (I got all the details, and believe me, I wish I had a weekend like that!) Aches and pains aside, and given MacGyverable logistics, I plan to be out there doing the same thing at that age. :D

message 29: by Lidia (new)

Lidia I'm 47 so I'm not scared to read a story with fifth old men: but are really old? I not think so. Even if new cover is best than last

message 30: by Librarian (last edited Mar 25, 2012 09:49AM) (new)

Librarian Kate The new cover is great, altho I actually really liked the men in the original cover... but please hurry the printing factory wheels so I can get copies for my library - I've got several very faithful readers of m/m fiction, and actually most of them are over 30, and a few are over 50 and would LOVE to read this.

Nobody really wants to be reminded of the indignities of aging in a romance novel, but having realistic characters who aren't 20-year-old sexybois is beyond refreshing - it's hot. Seriously, my daughter is 26, and I've MET her 20-something guy friends. They are still doing belching contests and think the world was invented yesterday. I hear you on the tight young bods and the desperation of love when you're young, but the re-discovery of that desperation when you've written it off as a relic of your past is fan-fucking-tastic. And these guys have that, with fireworks on top!

Richard and Logan are HOT. Hotsy-totsy gorgeousity that makes me stand back and say "DAYum"... not like the young-uns that make me go all protective and want to take 'em home and make 'em pancakes. I still love stories with hot, pretty younger men, but Richard and Logan are, like, RAWR!

Well, I'm sure mature romance isn't for everyone but there's a lot to be said for experience, and I guess I tried to say it in this book... I wanted to show guys who were blindsided by their attraction to each other and decided to hang on to it. I have friends like that, and I think it's HOT!

Actually, there is a problem with what I was able to download via ARe just now. It went through all the steps correctly (Adobe PDF version) but all that appears is a couple sentences at the bottom of most (not all) of the pages.

I submitted a Help Ticket to ARe....but a heads up to you! :)

message 42: by Jerry (new)

Jerry I loved Family Unit when I first read it. I looked at my review and realized I never wrote one. So I have created a new list for myself of "to re-read" and this is at the top. Being somewhat older myself (55) I loved reading about mature men. As my husband and I have a pretty decent sex life I know great sex is very possible at this age and I trust into our later years. For us, the sex has just gotten better over the years. The only difference being the rate of recovery for a second round (rarely now) and possibly the length we go at it. The physical vigor and passion is still there as well as the frequency.

Well, they only ogle each other a bit on page; this short story is already 60K. But they're still interested. I hope you will like it (and will still have enthusiastic sex yourself at 80.)
