Silver Phoenix Labs: Back to the Future

splThe super talented Kathleen Grieve is posting today at the Lab gabbing about technology.

Morning and thank you for having me here today! I wracked my brain to see what tidbits of my internal geek I have stored within my synapses that you all might be interested in learning about.  Finally, I remembered that I’d recently scene a show on the Discovery channel hosted by William Shatner about how the original Star Trek television series had influenced our present day that I thought nailed a lot of things right on the head—so to speak.

There were so many things that correlated to the technology we have currently use that as a fan growing up watching the original Star Trek and mooning after Captain James T. Kirk, I’d never made the connections until they were pointed out to me.

Take the Star Trek Communicator, for instance.  Did you know that Martin Cooper, Chief Engineer at Motorola Company got his inspiration for our modern day cell phone from that one little piece of Gene Roddenberry’s imagination?  Look how that has influenced society as we know it to be now versus when we were kids watching that television show and were lucky enough to have a simple land line.

drmccoytricorderI’d be remiss if I didn’t mention modern medical advances.  Yes, how we diagnose and treat our patients today has a lot to do with Star Trek. Who knew that Dr. McCoy’s TriCorder with its non-invasive imaging style would prompt those in the field to develop a CT Scanner?  Computerized Tomography (or CT Scan) is invaluable in diagnosing cancers, strokes, abdominal problems…the list could go on and on.

makingtricorderA lot of physicians I work with (and yours, too, I bet) are currently using their iPads in their daily care whether it be rounding at the hospital or using it for their office visits, this piece of technology is a must have for practicing using cutting edge technology.

spockcomputerThe first computers were absolutely huge and took up walls of space.  But the smaller computers seen on Star Trek helped to influence our first home PCs.  Remember the old DOS systems?  Large, clunky…and very very slow…

apple_IIe_original_personal_computer I’m sure that a few of you will remember those.  We couldn’t do much with them and they were super expensive, but we still wanted one.  Now we have something like this…

moderncomputerWhat a big difference, huh? And the things we do on computers nowadays.  Every waking moment is tied to computerized technology whether it be playing games, social media, email…And this all from one little television show from the late 1960’s inspiring a bunch of “geeks” to put fantasy into reality!

Whether you’re a Star Trek fan or not, you have to admit that this is really cool! And the inspiration continued from all of the Star Trek television shows after the original which includes The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.  Can you think of other pieces of technology from these shows that have come to our real lives?
