My Review of the Vampire Academy Movie

Well, if you didn’t hear the news that came out recently, here it is again: the Vampire Academy movie’s US release date was moved up to February 7! That means, incredibly, that we Americans are only a few short days from it. I’m super excited about this and really hope you guys are too. I recently had a baby, so I wasn't able to go to the Hollywood premiere last night, but those who went are already loving it. They're not the only ones--I love it too! Yup, that's right, I got to see it in the comfort of my own home, and it is awesome. I could go on and on about what I love about it, but instead, I’m going to tackle some of the common questions I get, now that I can answer with certainty.

Is the movie a comedy?

No! I know some of the advertising really plays up the humorous side, but you have to trust me that the movie exactly matches the tone of the book: a dark, action-packed story with elements of humor and romance spliced throughout. That humor angle was played up in the ads and posters to pull in new viewers who think supernatural books/movies are dull, and it worked! We’ve seen an increase in new readers, which is awesome news. People who are worried about comedy are also worried this is “too high school.” But remember: all the angst and Russian adventure happens later in the series. This first book IS set in high school, but all the dark and serious issues are still totally there. If you watch TV, the odds are good you’ve probably seen a commercial that plays up the movie’s serious side. If not, check out these two trailers to see what I mean: Last Stand and Learn to Kill.

Is the movie true to the book?

This is the big question on everyone’s mind, and I say yes! As I watched it, I was really amazed at how many scenes they kept from the book. I expected more cutting. Some scenes go by fast (understandable with a 1:45 running time), but the moviemakers worked really hard to give at least a nod to every fan favorite scene. Here’s one of my favorites that I could watch over and over: Christian using fire magic in class.

But were changes made?

Of course. Anyone expecting a page by page translation of the book should just listen to the audio version because that’s the only way such a thing is possible. Books and movies are different mediums. You have less time in a movie, and some things that are awesome on the page aren’t so great on the screen. You also have to make sure the movie makes sense to people who’ve read the book AND to those who haven’t. That’s where a lot of adaptations go bad: they cater too much to readers only or too much to newcomers. I’m happy to say this movie hits the right balance, and all the changes made were really smart ones. There’s nothing that radically alters the main plot or characters. They make things look bigger and better and also clarify confusing issues. For me, tweaks like that are part of the adaptation process, and I actually enjoy seeing them.

How was the cast?

Um, awesome! Seriously. I’ve said from the beginning that I’ve loved the casting, and seeing them act just proved it. Every casting decision was spot on, and they were cast not just on their ability to play the character but also on how they interacted with the others. Chemistry is key in this series! Zoey IS Rose, and you’re going to have a hard time deciding which guy you love most because Danila, Dominic, and Cameron all knock it out of the park as Dimitri, Christian, and Mason. I especially love that everyone in the movie--whether they were the star or a small side role--really “got” their character. Lucy Fry, for example, read the book five times to understand Lissa. Seeing the cast bring the characters I created made me feel so emotional and reminded me why readers love those characters so much. It even made ME remember why I love those characters so much and that...gasp...maybe I want to keep writing stories about them!

Is the movie just the first book or all the books?

I’m so surprised this keeps getting asked. I can’t even fathom putting all six books into one movie. It’s just the first.

What about scenes in the trailer that appear to be radically different from the book?

I stand by my earlier statement that this is very true to the book. There are some flashbacks, dream sequences, and background scenes that were added, and seeing snippets of those is what’s confusing some people. Watch the movie. It’ll all make sense.

Are there werewolves in this?
THEY'RE PSI-HOUNDS, modeled exactly off a drawing I made for director Mark Waters.

Is there going to be a movie of Frostbite?

That depends on the success of this one! If it does well, there’ll be a sequel (and hopefully more). Part of the reason such a young cast was chosen was because everyone hopes there’ll be six more years of movies! But this one needs to do well. VA has a big following, but it’s no Harry Potter or Hunger Games. Half of those series’ fan bases could stay home, and they’d still succeed at the theater. We need our full fan base and new people at the theater to be successful, which is why the marketing team has worked so hard to pull in new viewers who don’t normally go to paranormal films.

What’s the final word?

The final word is that I’m super thrilled with the way the movie turned out, and I think you will be too. I’ve seen jaded people comment that I HAVE to say I like it, but here’s the truth: you can believe what you want, but I have a very hard time lying to you guys about things. For example, when my publishers give me covers I don’t like (yeah, it happens), I can’t bring myself to tell you I think they’re good. So, I’ll find a different positive way to spin it, like, “My publisher worked really hard on this and is so excited about it!” That’s what I’d be doing if I thought this movie was bad. Instead, I can say to you straight on that I really love it and hope you guys will as well. From cast to dialogue to breathtaking visuals, they really outdid themselves. The future of the franchise is in your hands now, so go see it! See it on opening day, and bring a bunch of friends because those opening numbers are critical. And remember, a successful first movie means we could very likely see Adrian and Eddie soon...

Octavia I will be seeing this movie in the near future. I love the series and want to show my support. I hope their will be a second movie. Frostbite is my favorite of the series. So to see it made would be amazing.

Gundega (Rouzmary) This is so great! I can't wait to see it! Ever since I found out (months ago) that there's gonna be a movie I've been counting months, weeks & now days to see it! Of course I don't expect it to be exactly like in the book, but that's ok with me. My sister also has read all the books & we really hope they'll continue & make next one into movie as well :)

message 3: by Hans (new)

Hans As much as I love the VA series (my all-time fave vampire book) I am sorry to say that I am not as excited as everyone else in seeing the movie. From the trailer alone, it looked just another B-rated movie which is easily forgotten and it's so frustrating because VA is legions much better than Twilight and so deserves more recognition. I hope the movie pulls through for the books sake.

Bookaholic (reads every mortal thing) Wait...There could be 5 more movies...!

THERE IS A GOD!!

message 5: by Amity (new)

Amity I can't wait to watch it! The first trailers were TERRIBLE. It looked like an uncensored bad Disney film waiting to happen. The new trailer looks more true to the book though. I can't wait to watch the movie when it's released in my country.:)

message 6: by Amity (new)

Amity And Zoey and Dom are so funny in interviews! --just wanted to add that.

message 7: by Maddie (new)

Maddie I can't wait! I hope my aunt is making plans of when to go.

message 8: by Ally (new)

Ally I'm kinda scared because of the trailers that I've seen. I'll take your word for it though and believe you when you say its okay. I'll be going to see it for Valentine's day.

message 9: by Amanda (new)

Amanda The nearest theater showing the film was almost 50 miles away and I was about to buy tickets anyway and make it a LATE Friday night, when they popped up close to my house! I can't tell you how excited I was...

I definitely didn't dig the humorous angle on the trailers, so I'm thrilled to hear that the author herself approves!

message 10: by Sanya (new)

Sanya I really can't wait even though I wish I could say I was a fan from the start I actually starting reading them immediately after the first time I saw the trailer when I went to see city of bones upon seeing I turned to my friend and said omigosh I am so going to read that! High hopes! :)

message 11: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sadler Im excited to see this movie but I haven't had a chance to read the books yet and I never see a movie based on a book without reading the book first. Im going to try and sneak it in this weekend.

Emelie I really like the books, they are some of my favorites, and I´m really excited about the movie, I will defenetly Watch it :)

message 16: by Amalie (new)

Amalie Well, in Denmark it comes in April, and I can't even watch it in my area... I don't even know where I'll be able to watch it, so that sucks badly!

message 17: by Angie (new)

Angie Like others have already admitted, I was also a little apprehensive when I first saw the trailers and promos for the VA movie. It does seem more "high school" and humorous than the books feel (especially with the "from the director of Mean Girls" tagline). But reading your review has helped quell my fears and has made me super stoked for the movie once again, Richelle!

I'm glad the actors are fairly unheard of, so they don't come into the franchise with any previous film baggage. I really hope it does well so we can see more of Rose, Dimitri, Lissa, and Adrian, and I will definitely be watching this one! Much love <3

message 18: by Tricia (new)

Tricia Cerrone Congratulations on your movie release and newest addition to your family! 2014 is a BIG year! Thank you for your personal review for the movie; I respect your critique most because this is your "baby". There is already such a buzz going on about the release, tomorrow is going to be a big opening night! Hope the popularity of your movie inspires more writing! :)

message 19: by Horsegirl275 (new)

Horsegirl275 I NEED AN ADRIAN. Also, I'm seeing this movie as soon as it comes out on Friday....can't wait :)

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

OMG!!! I can't wait until the movie is released in Australia wish it had of been release the same date as America but, we take what we get. I'm really excited and also scared to see the movie as I want the movie to stay true to the books, because I absolutely loved them. But as Richelle has said the movie is amazing, so I so can't wait until the movie is release. I hope the movie does well so in the future we can see more of our favourite characters.

Also Richelle Mead said something about the movie reminding her about how much she loved the characters and that makes her want to write more books about them. I and so many others would love to see more books written in Rose's perspective about how her life is progressing.

All I can say is I can't wait until the movie is release in Australia.

message 21: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Richelle, you've made me more excited to see this movie. And of course I'll be supporting by watching it several times in Australia.

message 22: by Gabs (last edited Feb 08, 2014 10:31AM) (new)

Gabs I'm going to see the movie tomorrow with a few of my friends. We love the books and read them about 2 years ago, so last year when we found out it was going to be made into a movie, we were freaking out! I really hope there's going to be a second movie because in Frostbite we see Eddie and ADRIAN! Lol, cant wait!!!

message 23: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Naylor I'm planning on going on Valentine's day with my boyfriend :D

message 24: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Marie I've been waiting for this movie for years. I can't wait to watch it.

message 25: by Katie (new)

Katie Me and my friends are going to see it next weekend when it's less crowded. This weekend we are most likely going to go see Frozen.

message 26: by Luisa (new)

Luisa Lee I just got back from seeing it an it was amazing! School got canceled so I sacrificed a morning of sleeping to see it and was not disappointed! Richelle Mead is right guys, it really stays true to the book.

message 27: by Gabs (new)

Gabs Me and my friends went at 2:10 and we were the only ones there besides an old man. One of my friends cried from being so happy. The ending was amazing.

message 28: by Dana (new)

Dana Tool my 12 year old daughter an her friends who had read the books as well the 4 of us love it! True to the books and Zoey really is Rose she is brought to life beautifully! Her spunk is perfect! We all agreed that we can't wait for the next one! Job well done. Go see it! 4 1/
2 stars!

message 29: by Gabs (last edited Feb 08, 2014 10:33AM) (new)

Gabs Anshita wrote: "I don't wanna see the movie. I totally hated the star cast, no offence. Their acting might be good but I imagined Dimka as more sexy and seeing him look so..well, gay on screen ruins the vibe. Plus..." Anshita, that's what me and my friends thought. Zoey just wasn't how we pictured her and since she was on Disney, we had very low expectations. She surpassed them though, in the movie she IS Rose. As for Danila, me and my friends were dissapointed at first, we didn't want him to be Dimitri at all, but he was great! The movie was mostly true to the book, and the ending was almost spot on, except they added a scene. It was amazing though, its totally worth it. I hope they make the second one.

message 30: by Patty (last edited Feb 08, 2014 04:31PM) (new)

Patty I saw the movie last night. It was opening night at 7:20 about 20 miles outside of Hollywood, Ca. I was one of about 50 people in the theater, not well attended. People laughed at parts that weren't funny because the acting was so bad. The love charm scene with Rose and Dimitri was hilarious because it was so unbelievable.
I love this series of books and have read each book three times. Quality wise, the movie doesn't come close to the books. I think the script wasn't bad, but some of the acting and all of the directing were poor. Casting could have been better too.
Dimitri should have been gorgous, tall, lean and muscular, he wasn't. The only thing they got right was his shoulder length dark brown hair and he was Russian. His accent was too strong though.
Surprisingly, the dialog and most of the scenes were right out of the books! So, why was the movie so bad? Direction I think. Also, too many fake Russian accents.
I am so sad that the movie was bad! This could have been another Twilight or Hunger Games movie series success story. If only the production had been better!
With that being said, I took two 13 year old girls and a woman from work with me to see the movie. None of them had read the books, but the teenage girls liked the movie and the adult said she would read the book, even though the movie was bad.

Don't waste your time or money on this film. Just read the series again.

message 31: by Liz (new)

Liz H I really liked the movie! It was funny in quite a few parts, and Zoey really embodied everything that I love about Rose. I thought the movie was great and I might even go see it again. I wasn't really sold on the idea of Danila as Dimitri, but I'm definitely feeling better about it after seeing the movie. :) The last scene with Dimitri and Rose had me smiling so big! I loved it.

message 32: by Sara (new)

Sara Jesus, I'll have to wait until June to see it ._.

message 33: by Lila (new)

Lila I have to say I was scared that the movie wouldn't be like the book when I first saw the trailer but I knew that I would see it in hopes that this movie will blow twilight out of the water! The books are so much better than twilight and I really like twilight myself but it's more of a romance than VA is I think. We'll I'm hear to say that my cousin and I made it to the very first showing in our area which was early Friday morning we even hoped to see a midnight showing which turned out not to be happening which we where sad about because we love the books so much and wished that they would have more hype. But we went in with open minds because like most people we didn't think the trailers did the book justice. Turns out the trailers didn't but the movie was awesome. There where a few things added that we like and didn't like, like always since we just reread the books for the millionth time we knew what was different. But we loved the added fight scenes which come on who doesn't. I don't think they showed enough of how much mason fells for rose was one disappointment because his death is so ground changing for her but it does touch on it some and shows that she's not into him more than a friend which we know. So I for one really hope they show more in the next on of her struggles for him because even though we love Dimitri. We are so hoping for a hit so that we can see the rest come alive as well. Congrats on your new baby and to VA coming to life before our eyes. I hope that people who have read the books go to see it even if you thought the trailers really sucked its good and bring every one with you we want frostbite out soon!

message 34: by Jamie (new)

Jamie The movie stayed true to the book. I loved it!! ♥ I heard a girl say that she loved Mason and couldn't wait till the sequel. XD

message 35: by Tia (new)

Tia Marie It was amazing sooo true to the book!!!!!

message 36: by Dee (new)

Dee It was a good movie. I loved the person who they chose for Rose. She was exactly how i visualized Rose should be. It was right on point!!!

message 37: by Katie (new)

Katie I just saw it yesterday with my mom, and I thought it was amazing. My mom comfessed that she thought it would be slow and boring and was excited when it turned out to be fastpaced and exciting.

message 38: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea I enjoyed it! My mom even enjoyed it but to be honest the trailers were horrible. They did not express what the movie was truly and made it seem cheesy. I hope people notice that the most. Really good version of the book though. Hopefully book 2 will be picked up.

message 39: by Mirrin (new)

Mirrin I was really dissappointed when I heard about the movie coming. Cause I so wasn't ready to share this series with the world.. I shed tears, I laughed and I dreamed about this series.. Though reading the review I probably will go and see it. In the Netherlands is coming out the 20th of February. For sure to show support, but sharing wow that's going to be a tough one.. I wan't everybody to love it don't get me wrong, I don't know it's hard to put into words. Will see.. maybe seeing the movie will change my feelings.

message 40: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Sankar My joy when I came to know about the movie knew no bounds. I was super excited about it. But the Indian theaters put a huge damper on it by announcing the release date, which is the 14th of February. Now that's a dampener because my 12th grade annual examination is around the corner, and since it is a pretty important factor for getting into good colleges there's no way I would be able to go to the theaters to see the movie. *cries* I want to see the movie!!

message 41: by Emily (new)

Emily in australia it isnt out till march!!! i cant wait any longer :(

message 42: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy Owens I loved it! They kept all the good snappy humor with the heart that is Rose and Lissa.
However, I felt they didn't capture the dark effects of Spirit as well, I mean - she never even really harmed herself. The one scene where she has cuts on her arms isn't even her doing it, and her out-of-control behavior... where was the teetering on the edge of sanity? That's why she starts the anti-depressants in the first place.

message 43: by Sarina (new)

Sarina @Chrissy Ownes I don't think lissa has MAJOR depression until later, such as book 2.

message 44: by Joyce (new)

Joyce OMGosh! I was so excited to go to the movies for my Birthday this year!
I can't imagine your excitement, my dd didn't read the books, but is going to now. It was awesome! Congrats!

message 45: by Staci (new)

Staci Gray Just saw it last night. I have to say that I was completely disappointed in the movie and felt that it was more of a parody than anything else. I loved all the books but I didn't like the acting and some of the scenes seemed forced and weird (compulsion and Rose's visions). Also, while reading the books, you feel a strong romantic connection with Rose and Dimitri, but I didn't get that in the movie. That relationship felt awkward in the film. I'll admit I'm an older reader (30's) and not the target audience, but the film could have been so much better. Not interested in the future movies if they are going to be filmed the same way.

message 46: by Ally (last edited Feb 13, 2014 09:27AM) (new)

Ally I thought that the script itself was fairly good. I was fine with the appearances of the chosen actors. A lot of the fighting scenes were pretty awesome and all of the major plotlines were there... However, I was still somewhat disappointed. Personally, I didn't care for the narration part. It kinda took away from the movie. Show, don't tell. Some of the acting seemed forced as well. It was a bit rough at times. Some of the jokes were kinda bleh as well.

Differences from the book that annoyed me...

1. Since when do the Moroi hiss and bare their teeth at people?

2. I really disliked the way that they portrayed Lissa's mood swings. It was more like PMS than mental instability.

3. Lissa's cuts. No, just no. That's not what they're from.

If they make more movies, I will go see them, but I will still prefer the books.

message 47: by Eddie (new)

Eddie Martinez Richelle, I thought the movie was good. The actors did a good job at portraying the characters. I did picture them differently but I felt the actors had the essence in them. I felt that we could do without the narration, the acting and the movie itself was enough for the fans and new movie goers alike. I agree with what I've read from several fans that the acting, humor, and other traits seemed forced and not natural. I also felt that we didn't get enough depth into Roses internal struggles regarding the royalty but her best friend being part of it etc. But most importantly I didn't feel the intense bond between Rose and Lissa. I don't feel the actors are to blame here but the directors/storytellers failed to grasp that important part of the story. If more movies are made I will go see them. Good luck I really hope the rest of the books will be made into movies. Thank you for giving us such wonderful characters that we hold so dear, which is in truth why we are commenting here in the first place.

message 48: by Sheechiibii (new)

Sheechiibii You guys think late February and March is bad. The UK doesn't get a release until April 23rd! I don't think I've ever seen a movie spread the release dates out so much.

message 49: by Antonija (new)

Antonija I hate the movie. I was so excited to watch it and yeah it is a comedy, no matter what you say. So many things were changed, things that could have remained the same. If I start to type everything that frustrated me, I think I would ran out of characters before I write half of it. I can't believe that the movie I've been waiting for for 6 years, was the movie I just saw. I still think this was some kind of a joke. I mean seriously? Karp the leader of the strigoi? Mia and Kirova? Lissa and Tatiana? And so on and so on.
Yes, I am aware that the events in the book mostly occured in Rose's head, but that didn't mean that they could turn this into some teenage comedy! I am so frustrated right now, you can't even imagine how much.
And I had so high expectations for this movie, because of you Richelle, because of what you said about it. I overlooked the fear that I had after I watched the trailers and it turned out EXACTLY like the trailers.
You will be always one of my favorite writers, and Vampire Academy my most favorite series along with Harry Potter, but I hated the movie. That is the truth.

message 50: by Antonija (new)

Antonija Staci wrote: "Just saw it last night. I have to say that I was completely disappointed in the movie and felt that it was more of a parody than anything else. I loved all the books but I didn't like the acting an..."

I am part of the targeted audience and I completely agree with you. Plus, so many things were changed. Lissa's cuts, Dimitri's seriousness, Mia and Kirova, Karps being the leader of the strigoi, which if we let that part out, was still weird cuz the battle occurs in the third book, not the second. And so many other things. Throughout the movie I was like "Are they serious?" all the time.
