Surprise! I'm Dead.

So, you're whipping through your first draft. Your main characters are doing what you want them to do and saying what you want them to say. The action is flowing. And you're coming up toward your big scenes. When you notice that someone is failing to talk.

We'll call this character "A" for the sake of this discussion.

Now the truth is you noticed this a while ago, but you ignored it.

"A" isn't a major character and doesn't mean much to you. Though "A" does mean a lot to your main character.

Alex Wow so "A" wasn't saying like anything, yet he or she had a huge impact on a major charactr. Is this "A" in Exile or Salvation? Back to train of thought, so u realizd that A is dead? Interesting, a person having a greater impact dead than alive. I've never heard of a book being made like that.

Sarah That's not entirely true; think of Hamlet. That story might have turned out differently if the Dad wasn't dead.

Anne Osterlund Hi Alex,

"A" isn't in anything. "A" is dead. *wink* And if you think about it, "A" could have been in any of my books (Aurelia, Academy 7, etc). All of my main characters have been greatly impacted by at least one death. It's possible I may have a morbid streak.

And Sarah, you are completely correct. There would be no story for Hamlet, would there. In fact, I would dare to say that there are even real people who have a greater impact after they are dead (think how World War I began).

Alex Hmmm very intesting. A charactr I guess can change anything that it wants. So this "A" is dead and had an impact. In any of your books... The story would have been very different if Aerin hadn't lost her mother, or her father. And a morbid streak can't be too terrible can it. It keeps charactrs interesting.
