Now as most of you know, I'm not really from around these parts. To that end I've been planning to set up a sustainable forest garden on the property that I've been collecting. The goal is to make the whole property work for me, giving most or all of the food and energy resources needed to survive over the next fifty to one hundred and fifty years. (I'm an optimist.)
To that end I've been planting some trees as a test, to make sure I can start and grow fruit trees here. It's largely a pine forest, which means slightly acidic soil from the pine needles that drop over time. Fruit trees and most berry plants love that. So far so good, but the conditions here are a little cool right now, though the growing zone will ship upward, probably from six a to seven, over the next twenty years, or sooner.
