In my college years (early 80's), he was a music staple and among my group was regularly listened to and referenced. Of course, we were also the D&D, science-fiction/fantasy nerds, some who wore mohawks (at a conservative college) and some struggling with gender identity. I just enjoyed being around people who expressed their difference in contrast to societal "norm". Bowie's freedoms influenced us all to be more comfortable in our skin. His impact drove other singers and performers to pull back the blinds and expose the layers of inner weird in every person. I wish him well wherever he is now...
