Throughout the entire time that Jamie was sick, Landon kept emphasizing how he prayed for a miracle to happen. (I think he mentioned praying for a miracle twice if I'm not mistaken) Was he waiting for a miracle such as a chance to love her? He was already in love with her even before he found out that she was ill.
Also I don't think either that you would pray for a chance to be with someone longer. Rather, you'd pray for them to get better. You hope for a chance of survival; pray that the person you love manage to get through that pain.
Of couse she dies, but it would be terribly sad and depressing if Sparks had actually written it into the novel
