Linda, you are not alone! I was duped when I first read this (early '70s) but looking at it now, I agree totally - can't get my daughter to agree tho - she wants to read it to my grand daughter! Eek!
I agree with your summation but this is a great teaching book for kids. It makes them realize what unconditional love is, how to recognize it and how to cherish love. I read it to my kids and we had great discussions on how to treat others and the environment.
I hate this book!!! It's always read to children in elementary school and the kids don't realize it's shaming them for using their parents. It's offensive to both children and parents.
Sandra, I just don't think a take-away from this book would be to cherish the unconditional love that one receives. I didn't get a hint that he appreciated anything she did for him and he never came around unless he needed something.
That's the point, Patty! You're supposed to notice how he totally USES the tree (parent) and doesn't thank her. It symbolizes a parent and child. Most kids don't realize this though, and they love the book even though it represents them in a horrible light.
this is the hardest part of being a parent cause you are more than willing to give everything to your child just to keep him happy...even if it means death :)
Yeah, that's why a parent should teach the child to be a giver and do things to receive the praise of thank you, that's very kind. A parent has to show this, so child can copy this act first.
Linda you seem to have a very personal reaction, and maybe the book reflects your own life in some way. I wish you peace.
