Amanda Alexandre I also saw that! It's impressive how people say that they prefer Colin, but that's because they actually like the BBC version more. Acting for acting, I felt that Matthew imprinted more layers in his Darcy.

Paula M I loved Colin Firth in the TV adaptation and to be fair over the series there was so much more scope for him to develop the character. Mathew MacFayden was a surprise choice for me in the role and I found him surprisingly good.
What I would say is that Colin Firth as Mr Darcy is (for me anyway) closer to the way Jane Austen intended him. In the book there is a greater emphasis on brooding resentfulness / arrogance and I think it is this that Firth brings out to the max. Physically I also find him closer to my expectations of a Darcy. Mathew is lovely but lacks a certain darkness.

Soph Maybe it is a bit of an unfair comparison after all. C. Firth had a lot of time to develop the character throughout the series, whereas M. MacFayden had to summarize it within 2 hours. Hence, his portrayal of Darcy differs from Darcy described in the book. Anyway, he will always be my favorite.

Lilly Insprucker Matthew McFadden DEFFINATLY. He totally captured the quiet, reserved person the Jane Austin was trying to portray in the book. McFadden will ALWAYS be Darcy to me.

AerinLuvs I am only 25% into the newer version! and I LOVE this cast!!!!

message 6: by AerinLuvs (new)

AerinLuvs OMG Matthew MacFayden is swoon worthy!!! He plays Darcy so well!

message 7: by Lena (new)

Lena Papanikolaou I like Matthew!! but i prefer Colin Firth! he is the best Mr Darcy i've ever seen!!

Jazz Singh colin firth

message 9: by Claire P (new)

Claire P And my answer is yes. To both.

message 10: by Stevie (new)

Stevie I have to agree, macfayden takes it hands down for me. I felt the same the connection between him and knightly and his mannerisms / emotions had it all around and me swooning. as much as I adore Firth as an actor I just couldn't get into his Darcy.

message 11: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Roth I also agree...he was able to bring more out of the character of Darcy in a believable way. I loved it!

message 12: by Megan (new)

Megan Frisbie I also agree. I liked how slow his Darcy's transformation is. I think the chemistry in that version is also much better than Firth's version.

message 13: by Janet (new)

Janet Rochester Matthew for me too. He embodied Darcy's shyness better than any other actor I've ever seen in the role. What really undoes me is when Elizabeth sticks it to him at the ball with her remark about how dancing is best to encourage affection, "even if one's partner is barely tolerable." She flounces away, and his shoulders drop about 3/4 of an inch. That kills me every time.

I love Matthew as Darcy! I mean Colin Firth is a great actor but I felt that Matthew MacFadyen was more of a broody emotional Darcy and I loved that :)

message 15: by Wandahost (new)

Wandahost I agree with 100% Matthew was better a Darcy.

message 16: by Willi (new)

Willi Matthew was a very romantic Darcy but lacked to aloofness. He was much too vulnerable at times.Firth was a comfortable Darcy in his own skin.He had Pride & Prejudice never lacking.

message 17: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Totally agree!

message 18: by Madhurima (new)

Madhurima Totally agree!!!!! The role of Darcy was tailor made for Matthew. His looks, style and particularly voice all suited the character very well.

message 19: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Yes, we were able to see his infinite struggle with his love and for his need to tell her. Mr. MacFayden is amazing!

message 20: by Howard (new)

Howard Brazee It doesn't matter - mini-series can do novels so much better than movies do.

message 21: by Nanci (new)

Nanci de Suffren Matthew MacFayden, absolutely. I love Colin Firth as an actor but his version of Darcy was very stilted and had little depth. He used very few of his considerable acting skills. Matthew MacFayden spoke with his eyes, his body language and THAT VOICE, WOW! His Darcy was far more intense and "fleshed out" than Colin's.

message 22: by Bri (new)

Bri This look right here is the reason I love McFadyen. It's a look of heartbreak both subtle and complete.

I really never gave a second thought to how harsh Lizzie's rejection was until I saw this. I have never wanted to reach through a screen and comfort a character so badly as I did with this scene.

message 23: by Chrystelle (new)

Chrystelle Agree, MacFayden all the way

message 24: by Francesca (new)

Francesca Ferraro I completely agree! I felt as though his portrayal was too prideful for anyone to develop any affection for him, lol

message 25: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Matthew MacFadyen. He definitely got Darcy right. You can see his love for Elizabeth, when she is not looking. He most definitel is Darcy.

Colorful Language MacFadyen, ea-sy money.
