I love that answer, Kate. I teach 5th grade and talk many times throughout the year about protagonists and antagonists. We look many times at fairy tales to begin this discussion. Your answer and the part about opening our hearts to trust animals is something so true.
I think all the characters sort of "just show up" when you write. Isn't that wonderful!?
