Jenny Wells Ah! That word "only" really stands out to me.

Cheryl Strayed How so?

Jenny Wells "only because they believe..." I wonder about self-sacrifice. For example, if the couple is no longer lovers, but good friends, maybe they (ok, a woman) stays for the kids at the cost of her own fulfillment. Maybe the kids know, maybe they don't. Esther Perel says people get divorced more these days because of a hope for greater happiness vs. abuse, addiction, etc. There's so much talk about being true to oneself, following one's path, etc., but do parents have a higher obligation? Yes. It is a case-by-case personal question. Understandably.

Cheryl Strayed I agree that parents have a higher obligation. I meant that if they are truly miserable and the absolute only positive thing between them is the children they had together I can see why the couple would choose to divorce. But of course it's hard to talk about this issue in such general terms. There are so many different experiences and stories.
