154447 I love Margaret Atwood! What's her most recent series about? Blind Assassin is my favorite by her.

154447 lol As to the ORIGINAL question posed, I try to find a happy medium. The only reason I use a thesaurus is because I'm quickly losing my mind and often can't think of the word that's on the tip of my tongue -- yesterday it was "flight attendant." Yes, I'm being serious. I could not think of the word "attendant" and had to Google it.

Sometimes I think "said" is all a scene needs, whereas sometimes you need to give your readers a clue as to what's going on in your character's mind as they're speaking. Overusing one or the other can be a distraction to your readers.

154447 Ugh Riley, I remember that argument in school. I've also been told that "hopefully" is not actually a word. . .but I've never researched that.

154447 This looks great! I'm definitely going to use this for Hollow Towns :)

154447 The word that I couldn't stand when I was growing up was catharsis. Something about it rubbed me the wrong way.

Now, I hate the word "Swag." I've never seen it used in a serious book, but I have to resist the urge to smack teenagers who use it seriously :)

154447 Sure CB, I understand what your'e saying. But there's also a kind way to say something and a negative way to say something. Offering help to someone who is asking for help is one thing, but submitting someone to a critique who has not asked is another (not saying you've done this.)

Please also note that this is a support group. We're just here to give people a place to meet fellow authors, vent frustrations, and ask for help when they need it.

While many authors want to become successful authors, others are doing this just for fun and telling them that their covers "don't work" doesn't really mean anything to them. They've followed their vision and that's great.

As Christina said, we are working on setting up new folders and getting better organized. But the general rules of the group will not be changing. Constructive criticism only to those who have asked. I am one of those people who does not like to step on toes. Not for fear of not pleasing people, but because everyone has a unique vision for their work.

This is all a long winded reply simply to say that: We are a support group, which is what Christina is trying to convey (I believe). There are plenty of criticism groups out there (we've all seen the websites). As our group grows (and it is rather quickly) we're going to get a wider and wider variety of writers, readers, artists, etc. It's not just a matter of supporting each other and building each other up, but really, the core root of this group is that it's tough to be indie. And we all need somewhere to go where we feel safe and secure. That is what this group is meant to be. That safe and secure place where you can ask for help and not be thrown under the bus -- so to speak. If that makes sense.

154447 I could talk about Tito's for hours. lol Kidding. But it does help to remove my inhibitions and get me writing -- even if I have to rewrite it later. Sometimes you just need to get those words onto paper!

Igzy wrote: "Nabokov is an interesting author in that he was a native Russian speaker, but became a technically masterful author and lecturer in the English language. His book "Pale Fire" is just lovely if you ..."

154447 Well sure. No one likes sweet and innocent anymore.

154447 I accept Tito's Vodka and cold cans of mountain dew. lol In all seriousness, don't fret. :) I never once made that connection. I thought your work was incredibly unique.

154447 Well, I didn't think Legacy read like Adams :) So no nightmares :)

154447 And before I start getting messages of rage, I do not *hate* Faulkner. I just cannot stand "As I Lay Dying." Personal opinion.
Apr 30, 2015 08:15PM

154447 No. . .it didn't throw Faulkner at me. . so that's good at least ;)
