I have to give a critique speech for my public speaking class so I chose The Scorpio Races to talk about. So obviously I HAD to listen to it again for "research purposes" 😎😏

At first I wasn't sure I was in the mood for it, but apparently I'm ALWAYS in the mood for it because I LOVED IT AGAIN!! I swear, this is legit like the most perfect book ever. See, that's what I'm saying my speech. About how The Scorpio Races is a perfect book because of the unique setting, fascinating characters, and memor I have to give a critique speech for my public speaking class so I chose The Scorpio Races to talk about. At first I wasn't sure I was in the mood for it, but apparently I'm ALWAYS in the mood for it because I LOVED IT AGAIN!! I swear, this is legit like the most perfect book ever. See, that's what I'm saying my speech. About how The Scorpio Races is a perfect book because of the unique setting, fascinating characters, and memorable storyline.

First off the setting. I absolutely love Thisby. It's so atmospheric and.....perfect? No words to describe it XD but I feel like I'm on the island. I feel like I'm actually there, seeing what they see, hearing what they hear, doing what they do, tasting what they taste (talking about November cakes here....I really need to make those!! I'm drooling now 😅). Sigh now I really want to gallop across the cliffs by the sea and then eat a sticky sweet November cake....

The characters are just amazing. I mean, how real can they get? They feel so so real. Like I could reach out and touch them. They're real people, with real problems, struggling to thrive on the harsh island of Thisby. See, there's living, and there's living. You can't just live on Thisby, you gotta really live. Some people don't make it and escape to the mainland....*tears* but those who stay....those are the ones with Thisby in their bones and the sea in their blood. And it's just amazing.

And the romance....wow. WOW! it was so subtle and slow...so perfect (how many times am I going to have to say this word?). Clean too yay! Puck and Sean. They were just so amazing together. I love Sean. He's 👌. And obviously I can't form a coherent sentence about the romance so I'll just leave it at that :D

And finally, the plot and storyline. It's magical how well Stiefvater incorporated the mythological Capaill Uisce. I mean, man eating water horses?? Deadly races on the beach? What's better than that? It was all kind of violent, but that's to be expected when your horse is a man eater. But I still love them. They're deadly. And they're gorgeous. And Corr is the best Capall Uisce ever. I tear up every time at the end of the book. No spoilers tho :p. The Scorpio Races is never slow. It's steady buildup til the end, and each chapter, sentence, word is important. Everything is connected so nicely and it just flows like a perfect book should.

Now have you made it to the end of my (very ranty....not a word?) review and are wondering what the point was? I'll tell you. Read this book. Read The Scorpio Races because it is the perfect book. Trust me on this one 😊 ...more

Reread update:

I enjoyed the reread more than my first read since I knew better how the story was structured. The world is wonderful--deep and vibrant. The plot, both main and sub, are engaging. The characters, both the MCs and the side characters, are wonderfully drawn and unique. I just wish the ending had been fleshed out a bit more. It's a great way to end the book, but it is a bit too succinct for me. Overall--loved it!🥰

Hmmmm......I think I just wasn't in the right mood for this *shrugs* I was listening to it on an audiobook and repeatedly found myself struggling to pay attention to what was going on lol Don't get me wrong, the narrators were great! Actually, they were probably my favorite part about this book xD Their accents made it soo much better :P I just wasn't that into the story I guess...and there were a few weird things thrown in it that made me not enjoy it as much :/ Also, the ending felt ...more

Meat-eating murder horses.
A friend of mine used that phrase in reference to this book, and I like it.

Magical horses that come of of the ocean and hunt for fresh meat, or grab people who are already in the ocean and drag them down. Often creepy, sometimes intense - Stiefvater clearly did some research on horses and horse-racing for writing this book, and it added some depth to the detail.

Although they add a good bit of spice, the mythical nature of the horses is not actually essential to the stor ...more
