What Members Thought

This was not the book I thought it would be. There are parts that are humorous but for me it was mostly painful. If you're expecting a novel about 2 guys and a girl with cancer, this will be a disappointment. It is only peripherally about that - it's a mostly painful memoir of Greg Gaines, a slightly overweight, somewhat smart, decidedly goofy guy. He is navigating high school by trying to stay under the radar and being friendly with most of the high school groups and cliques. But as the mother

I laughed out loud several times while reading this book; I think teaching in a HS helped me find it entertaining. Greg (the narrator), Earl (his hilarious friend) make really bad movies. Greg's classmate Rachel is diagnosed with cancer and Greg's mom makes him spend time with her. Witty writing and lots of humor.

I can see why this book would not appeal to everyone out there, but I'm giving it 4 stars because:
1. It made me chuckle
2. The author completely nailed it on what it's like to not be in a social circle in middle/high school
What really works is that even though Greg sees himself as an intentional outsider, he's really just describing the angst of being a teenager. He's special because he's not special., but he does not realize that. Everyone chokes up on occasion, though perhaps not to the extend ...more

Enjoyable, but somehow disappointing. I suppose that is mostly because of my preconceived notions of what the book was likely to be. I mean, when you pick up a book about high school kids, one of whom is dying...Well, I just thought there'd be more insight, more of a lesson contained within.
It is not devoid of point. There's conceptions of friendship, teenage perceptions and the trials of high school. But there was surprising little viewpoint given of the "dying girl" throughout the book.

I enjoyed this book and found the storyline to be quite deep and meaningful. However certain parts of it were just not to my taste and way over the top. It would go from feeling like an adult book to a book for a child. I still can't decide what age it's for. It's definitely way below my age level but some of the language and terms I wouldn't expect to see in even some adult books.
Secondly, one of my major problems with this was the grammar. The author chose to write down stutters, upsets and p ...more

I know there are a lot of people out there who LOVE this book, but sadly I won't be joining that fan club.
