Spoilers for those who haven’t read this book yet…

I started out hating the male character, not just his name - Kingfisher, but also his potty mouth just gave me the Ick.

However, once the backstory’s started to make sense and Fisher started softening into more human less immortal grumpy old man, I was hooked. Sprinkle in some vampires, fated tattoos and an evil character trifecta showdown with fancy magical swords and I ended up really enjoying it. Bonus points for the cute fox pet - Onyx. Did n ...more

Quicksilver by Callie Hart – 4/5 Stars

Let’s start with the obvious. Callie Hart knows how to build a world. It’s lush, strange, and full of names that sound like they were pulled from an ancient prophecy scrawled in celestial blood. I mean: Everlayne, Taladaius, Zovena, Daianthus? Yes, chef’s kiss. But then… Malcolm.
Really?
All that dark, delicious naming aesthetic, and you name your villain after the guy who manages the local Staples?

But I digress.

The book starts with a bit of a crawl. First 20% Quicksilver by Callie Hart – 4/5 Stars

The book starts with a bit of a crawl. First 20% had me checking how many pages were left more than I care to admit. Then, somewhere along the way, it clicked, and I was utterly feral the last 200 pages. Couldn’t put it down. I was flipping pages like a gremlin on a sugar high. The pacing shift was dramatic, but worth it. And that setup for the next book? Chef’s kiss again, as long as this story doesn’t get stretched into a 12-book odyssey. I’m rooting for a tight, deadly trilogy.

Now let’s talk King ‘Swallow’ Fisher—what a man. He’s giving “teetering on the edge of madness but still hot” energy, and honestly? I’m here for it. His bond with Renfis and Lorreth gave me ACOTAR “batboy” flashbacks, which is either a compliment or a side-eye depending on the reader. The whole middle finger to the gods thing every time he passed a statue? Kinda cringe, not gonna lie. Like, we get it. You’re angry. Now put your finger down and go make another terrible life choice, you beautiful disaster.

Carrion Swift? Instant fave. I knew I loved that unhinged man from his first scene. And Taladaius? Total “hear me out…” moment, even before the bonus chapter. You know the one.

Plot twists? Oh, baby. I had at least three “WHAT THE ACTUAL F—” moments. Hart is playing chess while we’re all clutching our pawns. Respect.

Will I be reading the next book? Absolutely. Should you? If you like fantasy, flawed messes of men, and clever little “gotcha” moments—then hell yes.
Just… brace yourself for Malcolm. Sigh. ...more

reading this book is like eating a cheap candy bar. when you chase down that guaranteed sugary mouthfeel high but at the cost of a slightly processed chemical aftertaste. there’s parts i loved and there’s parts i cringed at. i went into it choosing not to take the story so seriously and i think that’s why it was still an enjoyable read.
