I think this belongs in my favorites but I'm not 100% sure.

It's really long and quite a heavy read. 500+ pages feels a bit excessive but I also liked this because I could really get lost into it. Definitely not something to pick out for some light, fun reading but if you want a good epic fantasy, this works wonderfully.

Some of the descriptions of genocide was actually so awful that I nearly lost my appetite.

I'm planning on reading the sequels but I need something lighter and funnier before I get ...more

definitely love the world-building, rich lore, and historical parallels. rf kuang masterfully crafted a vivid world, threading epic magic, shamanism, mythology and gods yet somehow grounded in reality with the commentary on the brutal effects of war, genocide, drugs, and colonialism. that said, the pacing threw me off a couple of times. there were some scenes that could have used more breathing room to build the tension and land the emotional weight they were clearly meant to carry (e.g. dr. shi ...more
