So good. At times made me think about what I know about Walker and her daughter and their relationship, which makes you look at Celie and Shug's relationship in a new light. While the plot is not the easiest to follow, the book is also not really about the plot so much as it is about the issues, and it's just so good.

American Book Award and Pulitzer Prize, 1983. This book deals with the racial and sexual oppression suffered by black women. The story unfolds through a series of letters to "God," written by the main character, Celie. Lesbianism and other sexual themes are dealt with very frankly, which may offend some readers.
