A fun read that had more cynicism and less swashbuckling than I anticipated. The Musketeers (there are actually four of them) are not quite the noble warriors I expected. In fact, they're more endearingly rogue than noble.

One thing that struck me is that the story seems like two books in one. It begins as a story about male valor and exploits and then, about halfway through, the great villainess Milady takes over. It's as if Dumas started out to write one book and then, midstream, wrote another.

Read this aloud to the kids as we prepared for France, but as it took exactly forever, we didn’t finish till well after our trip. It’s a fun romp with funny bits galore, but we all agreed that none of the characters are particularly people we would like to know in real life, and there is a lot of misogyny. We were glad to finally finish.

Dumas is such a talented storyteller! This exciting adventure details the friendship of D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers: Porthos, Aramis, & Athos. Themes for discussion include friendship, courage, loyalty, aristocracy, social standing, mortality, and love. ...more

The expository adventures—the hero arriving in Paris, meeting his friends, and achieving his initial successes—are very well written and realized. Clever writing, madcap comedy, etc.

I read the next two or three adventures (up through the completion of the Diamond Studs and into the kidnapping of Constance, and was abruptly all done.

This is a deserved classic, but like Pickwick Papers I couldn’t find any compelling reason to continue reading. The writing is good, where pacing and abruptness mak

I surprised myself by how much I really like this book. Even though I have seen the movie (the 1948 version) the book held secrets that the movie didn't. This is one classic that has justified and kept it's claim! ...more
