The one thing Colleen Hoover knows how to do is rip your heart out, put it back together and then rip it out again. I would go as far to say that she is the queen of this and Reminders of Him was no exception. When I tell you I cried, I mean like snot sobbing in my LoveSac while I read this in one sitting. So why not 5 stars? Well, let me tell you.

Reminders of Him is the heartbreaking story of Kenna who made a horrible decision and paid for it dearly. Aside from losing the person she loved the most, she also was forced to give up a baby she never got to know and spend 5 years in prison. Now that she's out, she wants nothing more than to have a relationship with her daughter but not everyone is ready to move on from the past. Kenna soon finds herself wondering if coming back was really a good thing or not and if her daughter would just be better off without her.

I felt for Kenna, I really did. She made a horrible mistake and keeps paying for that over and over. I'm not saying what she did was right, but I can also see that it wasn't done maliciously. It's definitely a hard situation. I understood both sides - Kenna wanting a relationship with her daughter and her daughters guardians/grandparents not wanting Kenna in their lives because it's too hard to see her. I also really liked the addition of the letters that Kenna wrote. Writing can be very healing, even if you're writing to someone who will never read them. There's something powerful in words and Kenna just needed to get it all out without judgement so she can try to heal. Her letter about that fateful night just ripped my heart out.

Then there was the romance. I loved Ledger. His relationship with Kenna's daughter was the cutest thing ever. And I, like Kenna, was super happy to have someone like him in her life. I also liked that Hoover put us in his head so we could see the turmoil that he was going through. Falling for the person who took away his best friend and possibly alienating everyone around him because of this. How do you choose?

So why the 4 stars instead of 5? I felt like this book was leading up to Kenna meeting with her daughters grandparents and when it happened it was just BAM. To me, the entire ending felt rushed and not we didn't really get the time to soak in these new feelings about what was happening. It just went smoothly and all was good. It was still emotional but I honestly expected more based on what we just went through with the rest of the book. But also, this could just be me because there are 5 star reviews everywhere for this book. Another knockout from Hoover. ...more

The only other CoHo books I have read were Layla and Verity which I had been told are fairly different from her others, but within just pages of picking up this book I knew it was going to be a winner!
