Violet Sorrengail & Xaden Riorson

There are so many things going on in this book that it's hard to put into words without giving anything away. What I will see is that Violet continues to grow. It was definitely to her benefit that she had been trained to a scribe before becoming a rider. It is also to her benefit that she is an adept student, and she is a survivor. She is going to fight hard for what she believes in and for the people she cares about.

The first book in this series was more compelling than this one for me for the simple reason that in the first book the disability rep was supportive of accommodations for Violet to achieve what she wants to and in this book it was mostly used against Violet. Outside of the disability rep, this series doesn't stand out for me vs other similar romantasy series. I'll keep reading in the hopes that the disability rep improves. ...more

REREAD 2/7/2025
I first rated this book a 4 star but I'm changing that to a 5 star read. I enjoyed this book so much more then I did the first time I read it. I love the relationship growth with Violet and Xaden. I like how some of the cadets redeemed themselves and did the right thing. I still love the way this book ended because it makes me look forward to Onyx Storm which I plan on starting this up coming week.

It's been a long time since I felt this way about a book series.

This one was almost as fun as the first! It lost a star only because I feel like the conflict between Violet and Xaden was somewhat repetitious -- either sit the characters down and hash it out or don't, all of the half conversations were frustrating. I also feel like I lost a bit of Xaden with him constantly being gone even though I understand that in the setting of the book it was realistic.

I did listen to the audiobook of this and can say I was not bored for a minute.
