After the untimely loss of her mother, Cheryl Strayed found herself in a downward spiral, quickly learning that death isn't always the only way you lose the people you love. Finding herself alone in the world, turning away from her husband and towards cheating, irresponsibility, and heroin, the idea falls upon her as a saving grace. To hike the Pacific Crest Trail, from Southern California to the Bridge of Gods, Oregon...and to hike it alone.

"Wild" proved to be a heart-wrenching account of Cheryl's journey not only through the grueling miles of hiking, pain, and poverty on the PCT, but also of her journey to healing and self-discovery. “It seemed to me the way it must feel to people who cut themselves on purpose. Not pretty, but clean. Not good, but void of regret. I was trying to heal. Trying to get the bad out of my system so I could be good again. To cure me of myself.” The truth in Strayed's emotion is raw and unfiltered, showing grief, struggle, and acceptance without the falsivities of philosophy, making this book a must for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one, and felt that life couldn't possibly continue. Strayed triumphs as a heroine in her own right, proving to herself that the impossibility of hiking thousands of miles on her own is a feat that can be accomplished. Proving to herself that she is strong enough to carry on in life.

I picked up this book several times in the store before I finally committed to buying it. I am a firm believer that books find you when they're meant to, and this one came to me at a perfect time in my life. I am inspired and awed by the true account, and ultimately I recommend it to anyone who has had to find the power within themselves to carry on when all seems lost...because regardless of the miles ahead, the storms at hand, and the aching of our feet, we are all still traversing a beautiful path. ...more
