This book was great! Suspenseful, witty, humorous, well researched (at least I assume it was, I cannot say for sure that all the science and math was correct, but it was very detailed). I am not sure this book is for everyone, but for me it lived up to the hype!

I have been putting this review off. Why? Because my opinion kind of falls on to the unpopular side of things. As far as I can tell at least. But it only falls that way sort of...so that is good I guess?
There had been so much hype around this book, then the movie, and then the movie and the book that I figured I really should read it.
I should have known better. The amount of hype I was exposed to for this book raise my idea of it so high that there was no way that it could have possibly reached ...more

I often find that popular books don't live up to the hype, but that was definitely not the case for The Martian. While at times it was a tad optimistic, I found myself being late to things because I couldn't stop reading this. This is a great survival story with very real-to-life characters. The journal format made it easier to read in smaller chunks, and I loved the bits of humor interjected into the ongoing dialogue. Can't wait to see the movie now. Highly recommend!

What should be a routine mission for the third astronaut team to land on Mars turns to disaster when a sandstorm hits and causes the team to evacuate Mars only days after their arrival. Astronaut Mark Watney is struck by debris trying to get back to their ship and is blown off course. The other astronauts try to search for him, but with no readings on his bio-metric suit and unable to see him in the storm, they're forced to leave Mars without him before any damage can be done to their ship and t

It was a really great book, and it’s definitely one of my favorite books for 2015. I think a lot of people thought it wasn’t worth the hype, but a lot of people also thought that it definitely was worth the hype. I’m part of the latter.
Mark Watney is a very compelling, funny, and memorable character. He just is. And yes, I consider him the coolest astronaut in the world… and it’s such a shame he only exists in fiction.. but I’m glad Matt Damon at least played him in the movie.

Very technical book - you can tell Weir did his research and knows his stuff very well. It was incredibly captivating. To imagine yourself stranded on mars for over a year...
The one issue I had with the book was how many problems arose (although, he is trapped on Mars with little food or support, so what is Weir to do?) but it made the real climax less thrilling.
Overall a very good book, and, despite its technical detail, an easy read.
