Shelves: proper-books, horror, gothic

I am torn by this book, following the release of the film (which I'm yet to see) and it being described as one of the best re-workings of the vampire legend in the past decade I had quite high expectations. When I started reading I was disappointed as it was not the vamp-fest I thought it was going to be but then as the story progressed I enjoyed it more and more. So much more nuanced than the film - gritty, grim, atmospheric. And he may have created the grossest Zombie in literature. Loved it

Honestly I preferred the film - which is perfect. For me the book lacked the tension and that very Swedish fatalism that pervades Sweden's best films - maybe it is there and just does not translate. For me there was too much emphasis on the pedophilic nature of Ely's keeper/companion, which was far more subtle in the film, and the theatrical version the love story between Ocsar and Ely seemed more real - maybe that was just the impact or not really working out what was going on until the end cre ...more
