I am torn by this book, following the release of the film (which I'm yet to see) and it being described as one of the best re-workings of the vampire legend in the past decade I had quite high expectations. When I started reading I was disappointed as it was not the vamp-fest I thought it was going to be but then as the story progressed I enjoyed it more and more. Honestly I preferred the film - which is perfect. For me the book lacked the tension and that very Swedish fatalism that pervades Sweden's best films - maybe it is there and just does not translate. For me there was too much emphasis on the pedophilic nature of Ely's keeper/companion, which was far more subtle in the film, and the theatrical version the love story between Ocsar and Ely seemed more real - maybe that was just the impact or not really working out what was going on until the end cre ...more

Is there any point at all in anything that happens in this horrible book?

EDIT: I think the best description I can come up with for it is it's like a crap Wasp Factory that's about four times as long.
