Shelves: reviewed, 1001-books-to-read, 19th-century

The opening scenes are sensational: Dumas certainly realized this prison scene was the best in the book as he repeats it, from another characters pov towards the end of the book. There is a very good court scene toward the end of the book also. But for me the middle 3/5ths or so of the book sags as Dumas' throws everything that can pssiby happen to people living during that period of time, and it becomes so overwhelming to the point of being tedious. This book is nothing like the 2002 version of the movie (just in case you were like me, loved the movie, and were excited to read that story, this book, isn't that story). It's still a good book though. It's very long, prepare yourself, but I read it for fun when I was in high school so it's definitely doable. My three favorite things in the book: one, the Count (I loved his character), two, the plot (it's a complex plot), three, the way the Count has to deal with God and his own soul. The devel ...more

Really enjoyed the reading experience. The book read like a modern book in the fact that I was hooked and flew through it. Usually with classics I have to push through but with this one I couldn't put it down.

Love to tell people that the tv show Revenge is based on this book. ...more
