What Members Thought

Jenny (Reading Envy)
I finished this month's Sword and Laser pick. It's about 100 pages setup about folding dimensions and quantum travel, 100 pages investigation, and 150 pages adventure, so you know, hang in there.

I found some aspects frustrating but was entertained enough that I could be persuaded to read the other books. Part of that persuasion happened in the comments to my Instagram post, thanks to the commenter if she sees this:

A: Have you read 14 by him? I wonder if it feels less sloggy if you have. Even tho

Full disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book from Net Galley.

My first exposure to Peter Clines' work was thanks to Audible, which recommended his earlier novel, 14. I rarely buy books without existing knowledge or recommendations to go on, but the summary sounded really interesting - a man moves into a Los Angeles apartment building and starts experiencing mysterious and possibly supernatural events - and the narrator, Ray Porter, was excellent. I had never heard of this book. In fact, I had never heard of the author, Peter Clines, either. This was a book that was chosen by one of my book clubs and boy, am I ever glad it was! There's something I like about this Peter Clines fella, despite the two 2-star reviews. I get a certain comfort from how he writes about everyday mundanities. Maybe that's why I get disappointed when the shit hits the fan in his novels. I'm broken out of the comfort zone that he lulled me into, and not in a good way, because when his novels get crazy, it's not in the most interesting of ways. Clines is great at ramp up, creating suspense, weaving a mystery, but overall execution leaves a bit to ...more

Probably a 4.5. There was a brief period where it got a little jumbled, but it totally won me back in the end. Will definitely be looking forward to his next book.
