A magistrate on the lam due to critical statements directed toward her emperor is taken in by distant cousins on a space station run by a bureaucrat resentful of the new arrival. This premise offers only a pale glimpse of the events that follow, which form a tale driven by pride, spite, treachery, and disloyalty, among other emotions, most of them negative. This was really interesting! From the book it's clear that we are dealing with an Asian society in the future, set in space (I later found out that this author has this alternate world, called the Xuya universe based on the idea that the Chinese kept exploring in the early 15th center, instead of abruptly ceasing as they actually did, and eventually colonized North America.
