This young adult vampire novel was pretty darn good. The only reason this is not a "5" is because I read Let The Right One In before this - and it had a psychological complexity that this lacks. But I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Allie, as a heroine, is fantastic - I loved her strength of character, and reading about her efforts to maintain her humanity after she became a vampire.

This book was so good that I could not put it down. I read it while my two year old watched Diego, which normally distracts me. I read it until I couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore. Of course all that reading meant it just ended sooner. And the amazing thing is that I don’t normally like vampire books. But this book was AMAZING.

Let me start by saying that I loved this book. Julie Kagawa wrote a gripping dystopian adventure. WOW! I give this book 4.5 stars.

This YA book followed Allison (“Allie”) Sekemoto, an orphan living on the fringe of “City”. The City was ruled by vampires and the surviving humans had been reduced to slavery. The humans had to register and get a mark from the Vampire prince. This mark allowed those humans to get rations of food, but also protection from Rabids (mindless creatures who just attack eve Let me start by saying that I loved this book. This YA book followed Allison (“Allie”) Sekemoto, an orphan living on the fringe of “City”. The City was ruled by vampires and the surviving humans had been reduced to slavery. The humans had to register and get a mark from the Vampire prince. This mark allowed those humans to get rations of food, but also protection from Rabids (mindless creatures who just attack everything). In exchange for food and protection, the humans had to donate blood to feed their vampire masters.

Allie decided that she would rather free than register with the Vampire Prince and his community. The advantage of this rebellious act is that she is not a blood slave to the vampires. The disadvantage is that she will have no protection against rabids, she will have to scavenge for food as opposed to getting a ration and that she will have no place to live in the city. If she was caught stealing food, then she would be punished by death. Well, feisty Allie decided to take her chances on her own. One day, while on a food hunt, Allie and her crew were ambushed by rabids. As she lay dying, a vampire came and offered her a choice. Allie chose to become what she hated more than anything in life, an undead—a vampire.

Her sire, a vampire named Kanin, begins teaching her about life as a vampire. He thought her to defend herself. He educated her. He also tried to instill in her that vampires are view as nothing more than monsters to humans. He urged Allie to let go of all her ties to humanity and embrace her new place at the top of the food chain. Allie had a hard time with the lesson because this heroine has a strong respect for humanity. She missed her life as a human. This yearning for human connection eventually led her to separation from Kanin and her joining with a group of humans migrating to Eden. This group was led by a preacher named Jebbediah and his adopted son Ezekiel (“Zeke”).

Now Allie’s internal struggle truly catapults as she struggles to blend in. Allie had to remember to breathe, eat food, and not bite anyone, even though she had a hunger for blood. I was holding my breath every time Allie was close to one of them because I knew she was fighting a losing battle. What would the group do when they discovered that they have adopted the one thing they hate—a soulless vampire? As Zeke and Allie developed feelings for each other, what would happen when Allie is unmasked? What will Allie do to them?

This is my first time reading Julie Kagawa and I loved her writing style. She did a great job building this new world. She did a great job developing the characters and telling their individual stories. One thing that stuck with me was that Allie was a natural leader. She cared about people, regardless of how they treated her. She wasn’t selfish and she was really brave. I loved her as a heroine. This was definitely her story and she was so likable.

I highly recommend this book to those who love great story telling. I can’t wait for book 2.

I read this book for a challenge. It has been on my shelf for a long time now. I haven't really been into vampires lately. I might have rated the book higher if I was. But for now, it kind of reminded me a lot of The Walking Dead TV show. The rabids, reminded me more of zombies than vampires and the thing with the farmhouse and the preacher. Maybe some day, if I get back into vamps again, I might read the next two books, but for now, I'll pass. ...more

I had to power through the first half of this book, which just felt like so much tell-don't-show world-building that I was starting to lose patience. This book is so refreshing!! it's not like any other vampire book with romance. There is girl likes a boy going on, but that's all and a girl is a vampire for a change.
