What Members Thought

Pretentious, self-indulgent, self-aggrandising, and still so, so worth it. Surely one of the most ambitious works of the past few decades. Even if it falls short of its own mark, that mark is so remarkably high, and Byatt's prose so arrestingly beautiful, that one just has to let it do its thing. If it has a few thin characters in its crowded halls, and if its plot is an unlikely vehicle more suited to noir than the dusty academia into which it wades, none of that matters. I am not a huge fan of love stories, however this was a extremely fascinating love story. One with drama, suspense and intrigue- set in England, France and South America and which covered topics as wide ranging as the study of insects, mythology, feminism and infidelity. A great book!
