What Members Thought

People in brightly lit places cannot see into the dark.
Another day, another dystopian-fantasy trilogy. Originally I’d resisted The Winner’s Curse, dismissing it as a Hunger Games clone. I was wrong. Sure, similarities exist between The Winner’s Curse and the dystopian-fantasy-Hunger Games-inspired oeuvre. But The Winner’s Curse distinguishes itself by tackling relevant, vital societal issues and making them obvious and accessible to the reader.

So much love for this book ❤️❤️❤️ PERFECTION, FEELINGS EVERYWHERE.

After reading A Dance With Dragons, I wanted more books like the Game Of Thrones series and this was on a list of YA books suggested for Game Of Thrones fans. But I didn't pick it just for that reason, I wouldn't have read it if it didn't sound interesting. And though I found this to be an overall solid and well written book, it didn't have too much of a Game Of Thrones feel. Sure there was some political intrigue and some sneaky plotting, but the bulk of the book was given over to the nice slow

(Oct. 2018) I reread this month because I wanted to get lost again in Rutkoski’s beautiful writing. Each time I’m amazed at her subtle depiction of humanity. Loved it even more than the first.
(April 2016) I'm crazily busy with final papers. But I need a distraction. So I decided to start this series again since I just read the final book and had to start over. My star rating:
Plot: 5/5
Pacing: 4.5/5
Characters: 4.5/5
World: 5/5
Romance: 4.5/5
Enjoyment level: 5/5 stars
I have the second one in the series, but I am going to wait (!) until the 3rd comes out and marathon the series. Absolutely fabulous YA fantasy. I very very rarely buy hardcovers but I am so glad I invested in this series. =)

Read my review of both books in this series on FickleLit.
The Winner’s Curse is mostly romance. Kestrel and Arin’s relationship seems doomed from the beginning. How could it be anything other than secret? I appreciate the nature of their relationship. Though there’s an immediate attraction, the relationship is slowly won, as stereotypes and prejudices are broken down. As the story unfolds and Arin’s secrets are revealed, their relationship becomes even more complicated. Both must choose between f ...more
