Liked it a lot! But could have been better.

This book-
It was different-but beautiful
It dragged on- but it encircled you in the story
It was confusing in multiple parts- and yet it still weaved itself right through and tied it all back.

(Questionable) Pirates meet time traveling with maps and myths.

The general concept of the story was lovely! I definitely liked the mix of mythology and time traveling sailors. Although some of the myths and whole time traveling did throw me off at the beginning ...more

Well this was a lot of fun!

Fun things
- Super diverse cast.
We have the lovesick, time-traveling Captain Slate, who is chasing through time after a map to go back and save his true love from dying.

Kash: the fictional Persian thief

Bee: the African lesbian who is haunted by the ghost of her dead wife

Nix: the half-Chinese daughter of a time-traveling pirate and an opium den worker from Hawaii

- There’s also a tiny dragon

- And there’s a pirate ship that can travel anywhere in time, including fictional Well this was a lot of fun!

I also loved the banter between Kash and Nix and their slow burn romance. I was definitely shipping for them. Not once did they profess their forever, undying love for one another. Hallelujah!

But on her own, I didn’t really love Nix. I didn’t unlike her either. I just wanted more. This was a very heavy dialogue book. In a good way! But I think what was missing was more internal musing from Nix. We didn’t get a lot of feeling, especially noticeable in a first person narrator.

I also have questions. A few times I had to go back and re-read because I missed some tiny detail from before. And I’m still not clear on the rules. (view spoiler)That's the bane of time travel novels. You're going to have the newbies, who need a lot of explaining because they have no experience with time travel apart from Back to the Future. And then you're going to have the super-nerds like me, who are going to question EVERYTHING. I could have used more on that end.

All in all, though, I loved the story and the setting of historic Hawaii, a place I only had a tourist view, and didn't really understand as a real place. Now I feel like I do. I'm definitely looking forward to the second novel, hoping for more adventure, more explanations, and more Kash and Nix! ...more
