What Members Thought
I have always loved Neil Gaiman's books for younger readers, but I confess that his adult novels have left me cold. He wrote (I thought) like someone who had made his start in comics and graphic novels. Although his writing was witty, his characters seemed shallow, and his settings seemed dim without the aid of pictures.

I was expecting something less dark and gritty, but I found that regardless, I loved the book. Shadow's character is interesting, and the interactions with various people and places in the United States was really cool. I liked that they provided background by including immigrant stories to explain the premise.

When Shadow is released from prison early due to his wife's death, he just wants to move on with his life. Instead, he is asked by a strange man sitting next to him on the plane to go on a mysterious mission. Excellent, intelligent novel about what becomes of gods who are no longer needed. The book is cunning and thoughtful, and presents theological questions in a manner that requires the reader to think.
