It's The Walking Dead with REALLY BIG zombies.

But . . . killing zombies gets old pretty quickly, so unless the author punches up the drama with the band of survivors (or at least gives them personalities), I won't be sticking around for many more volumes. ...more

Having seen the brilliantly suspenseful anime, I decided to give the manga a read. This first volume summed up the first 4-5 episodes of the show and honestly, I found it a little too fast paced. I wanted the deaths to give me a little more feeling (other than the first one which was heart wrenching). I remember watching the pilot and just sitting in shock...the same way I did when I first saw the scene of what happened at the end of this volume. The story is breathtaking. My students in the anime/gaming club insisted I give it another try so I went for the manga. I did like this better. So far it's skipping the parts of the anime I didn't like. I do disagree in part with some of the reviewers. I think the manga does a good job in differentiating the characters, but no it's not the prettiest art I've ever seen. It seems experimental, harsh like the world its depicting.

100 years ago, the Titans appeared out of nowhere. They are giants with one purpose: to eat humans. Humanity has been driven behind a walled city. Actually several cities within the concentric rings with the king in the center (naturally). It's near-heresy to even mention the outside world and what it was once like. About the only people going outside is the survey group of the military and most don't come back alive. In fact, the humans know next to nothing in a century of Titan encounters other than they seemingly don't have to eat (since there aren't humans out there)and don't munch on other wildlife. they can regenerate almost any wound except if they're wounded in their Achilles heel (or the nape of the neck between the atlas and the occipital bone as the case may be.)

It opens with three friends in the outermost border town. The loudmouthed, hot-tempered Eren (the stereotypic angry boy), the more shy, weaker brainiac Armin and Mikasa, the kick-ass girl. After many years of peace, a colossal titan breaches the wall and forces them to evacuate. Eren loses a lot and swears to kill them all.

Fast forward five years. Eren and Mikasa are at the top of their military class (Armin barely made it and the higher ups want him in intelligence but he wants to stay with his friends). Eren humiliates the other top classmen who want to go to the interior and more or less hide out with the king. He wants to out outside the wall, something he wanted even as a kid (that horrified his mother until she died.)

Through this there are a few flash backs (like the creepy one of Eren's doctor father going off the rails and injecting Eren with stuff) but mostly it's full steam ahead into more Titan attacks and ends with one that goes horribly wrong. Armin nearly dies and things don't look good for Eren.

I think the story has potential. This one set up the world and now the characters need fleshing out. ...more

This story is harrowing and well- written. The stark illustrations only add to the underlying terror the last of the human race is experiencing. Really never thought of giants as particularly scary before. Now I do.
