This isn't my favorite David Mitchell book, and I read all four this summer. I love his voice in this one, as a pre-teen boy in the UK, far from his usual characters. I liked how the story was about the boy's life, rather than the major stuff going on in the background - war, divorce, etc. I also loved Mitchell's shout outs to his other books. ...more

I liked this very much. It is by turns funny, poignant, horrifying, and splendid. Jason Taylor is the name of the young boy who relates his adventures and misadventures during a very eventful year. He is so real, and so sympathetic that one cannot help but like him and want the best for him. The writing is superb, and the characters and encounters believable and true. I'm not sure what I thought of this. I think that it exposed the negative side of David Mitchell's imitative style more than Cloud Atlas, which is interesting as this was much less formally experimental. But it felt too much as though he had a checklist when writing this about what he wanted to cover about 80s England as well as what he wanted to be a part of this coming-of-age story.
