This book about Dr. Jim O'Connell and his medical team serving the homeless in Boston - and, in particular, its Street Team, which cares for those living on the streets (the "rough sleepers" of the title) - brought me back to my participation in a law school clinic that conducted weekly outreach to people in soup kitchens and "welfare hotels" housing families who had lost their homes. But what I did for a few hours a week for a few semesters, Dr. Jim has made his life's work.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical of this book going in. I had a feeling it would be preachy, extolling the praises of its subtitular hero. But that isn’t what I found it to be. It’s a compassionate, poignant look at the interaction between our healthcare system and people who live on our urban streets. There are occasional moments of broad analysis, but essentially it’s human-level, day-to-day reporting on one group of healthcare providers and the particular unhoused individuals they serve ...more
