Bathsheba Everdene, an independent beautiful young woman, inherited her uncle's farm in rural southwestern England. Complications arise between Bathsheba and her three very different suitors. Gabriel Oaks is as solid and strong in character as his name suggests. Sergeant Troy, who lives for the moment, is a seductive cad. Bathsheba's neighbor, Mr Boldwood, is a middle-aged, serious man who is becoming alarmingly obsessed in his quest to win her hand in marriage. The scene is set for an explosive ...more

A story about love and obsession, class distinction and the farming life.

The story revolves around Bathsheba, a young lady who is independent and beautiful. She inherits her uncle’s farm and plans to run it on her own.

Three different men enter her life: Gabriel Oak, a shepherd and farmer, whom she had met prior to receiving her inheritance. He is a good man- steady, reliable and kind, but definitely ranks below her now. Boldwood is a rich landowner and farmer, whose farm is situated next to hers

Thomas Hardy is a writer who paints. He paints pictures of the environment his characters inhabit, he paints pictures of the society they are a part of, and he paints pictures of the people, and makes them stand before you full-blown and detailed. That is probably one of the reasons I love reading Hardy so much. Each of the major characters in Far From the Madding Crowd walks off the page and becomes quite real.

Update--10/14/2012: I just completed a re-read of this novel. The more I read it, the more I realize that it is simply exquisitely plotted and written. Hardy-the-poet shines through on just about every page as he describes the pastoral Wessex landscape and the country rustics that occupy it. This is truly a gem of a novel, and one of my favorites by Hardy.

I’ve had real trouble organising my thoughts for this one so here is a bit of brain dump!

Hardy’s descriptions of nature are impeccable! He describes views of the night sky and storms rolling in and the images are so vivid you can feel yourself there.
These descriptions project a love and respect for the landscape they convey and this is contagious to the reader. The drama in nature is often a herald for some upheaval in the lives of the characters also.

The characters were well rounded and engagin

While he saw himself primarily as a poet, Thomas Hardy was also one of the giants of late Victorian fiction (though after the harsh reception of his last two novels in the 1890s, he devoted himself wholly to poetry). Written and published (originally as a serial, as many Victorian novels were) in 1874, Far from the Madding Crowd was actually his fourth novel, but is the first of his five major ones, and the first one set in his fictional county of Wessex, based on his native Dorset and ultimatel ...more

Beautiful writing and descriptions of the landscapes. The characters are amazing and you really get a feel for their emotions, wants and needs; especially Mr. Boldwood. Well worth the read.
