Extremely similar to the Ringworld series, or the Rendezvous with Rama series (find yourself in a strange place, figure out what the new world is). There is a lot of Burroughs Edgar Rice in this, as far as a "lone brave explorer" galavanting over the world. And, indeed, the author is clearly a fan, as was later associated with Burroughs groups.

What a crazy, wonderful, out of this world premise. I'll bet if a unproven author pitched an idea like this to his publisher they'd say "Um, yeah, sounds interesting. Got anything else?" Basically everyone who has ever lived is resurrected alongside a million mile long river. You can't die (you're resurrected the next day), food is provided and there's no technology beyond stone-age (at least in the beginning). Some of the main characters are Sir Richard Burton, Samuel Clemens, Cyrano De Bergera
