I completely agree. I can't believe some people consider this "romance"."

I also agree. I could only stand 100 pages but there was NO romance. It was very sick IMO.

Jane wrote: "The fact that Fifty Shades of Shit is number one makes this list a complete joke. She isn't even allowed to touch him, that's really romantic right there."

I keep hoping someone will remove it.

Sheetal Shenoy Where can u get free ebooks? there's 4shared.com but it doesn't have the books from this list.

Katie The fact that Beautiful Disaster made it onto this list let alone so close to the top scares me so much, I'm losing faith in humans. Barf.

message 111: by Evey (new)

Evey "Best Romance Novels of All Time"... And Fifty Shades of Grey is first? SERIOUSLY? A novel portraying an abusive relationship is catalogued as BEST ROMANCE?

You must be kidding me. You know, I'm losing my faith in humanity.

I'm soo tired of that book and everyone saying it's a good one... For me it's a joke and pointless.

Whoever that says it's good it's because

a) Never read another book
b) Never read a good book
c) Doesn't even get the real message of the book, nor understand the message of each character.

It's so bad written, the lack of plot is so obvious and not to say the main characters are the worst ever.

I totally agree with that. I just don't get it!! There are so many better books and... Aghh!! this stresses me out. I can understand that they like the book, but I just think they overestimate it... a lot :/

Evey Miri wrote: "Evey wrote: "Miri wrote: "Evey wrote: ""Best Romance Novels of All Time"... And Fifty Shades of Grey is first? SERIOUSLY? A novel portraying an abusive relationship is catalogued as BEST ROMANCE?

Indeed! I mean, it's okay, you like the book. But even if so, they already know -or should- that it's clearly not the best book ever written...
But whatever... As long as there's still people with some "book taste", I'll get on with those that have not.

message 116: by Tamalee (new)

Tamalee I really wish there's some buttons to lessen the votes. The result makes me sad, to say it politely.

THIS. OH, SO MUCH.

At least, a button to down vote or something. I just can't see that monstruosity of a book standing oh-so-proudly as the best romance ever. I. Just. Can't.

message 118: by Steph (new)

Steph I don't understand how 50 shades of grey made this list, not just because of how awful it is but I wouldn't say it was romantic given how he treats her. Maybe my idea of romance is completely different.

haha book sucks so does the movie tsk tsk tsk

message 123: by Loveliest Evaris (new)

Loveliest Evaris Okay, I'll consider Twilight a romance book. 50 Shades of Gray? Simply a guilty-pleasure-fanfiction you find in the M section of fanfiction.net.

I am floored that people consider The Hunger Games worthy of the title "romance". Screw that crap. Battle Royale has more romance than Hunger Games, even with a scene where (view spoiler) . Yeah, I consider a piece of literature with THAT in it more romantic that The Hunger Games...

message 124: by Lauren (new)

Lauren This list proves why sometimes listening to the majority of readers is not a good idea. I would like to get a feel for the women's (and mens', sorry guys) demographic who voted for all this...drivel.

message 125: by Dannica (new)

Dannica Marie 50 SHADES ? who the hell voted for that book? Can anyone tell me?

Grace wrote: "good list"

I agree that this is a good list - it contains many different styles - thanks to everyone who contributed. It was sad to read so many negative comments about the list - there should be no RIGHT or WRONG way to view any book or any person. It would just seem fair for all individuals to be able to contribute their personal input through these lists without feeling judged or insulted. It is nice to see such variety in what everyone is reading :)

message 128: by Susan (new)

Susan In my humble opinion, fast food fiction will do to the mind what constantly gorging on cheese burgers will do to the body. In moderation fine, but like a diet I would recommend balanced reading (some classics would help).

Patricia’s Book Summaries Apeksha77 wrote: "Is beautiful disaster that good ?"

Hell yes! I cannot tell you how many times I have reread that book. It really takes you through the ups and downs of love. Also, the second book, Walking Diasaster, lets you really know what is going in Travis's head and you know what happens in the future. Although I prefer Beautiful Disaster more, I think the characters are amazing and it is a joy to see them mature as characters.

message 130: by Alisinny (new)

Alisinny Leo wrote: "love in the time of cholera??????"

Yes, there are many more examples of "romance" novels out there which perhaps are more deserving of being in this list.
However, like any art form, literature isn't immune from the fashion of a particular moment. I don't think anyone with a high school or above education would argue that 50 shades or Twilight are in the same category as Jane Austen as pieces of literature. However, what both series have done has been to encourage people who otherwise don't read much (if at all) to pick up a book and read it for pleasure. Not because they were told to by a teacher, but purely for entertainment.
That said, I enjoyed the 50 shades trilogy on a purely fluffy level. It's certainly not a demanding read and once I overcame my frustration with the repetitive writing style, I found it different from what I'd usually read and did enjoy it
Twilight, is an altogether different animal. I found it predictable and repetitive. However, I kept reminding myself this is really teen fiction. I read it because someone I knew who had never read a book for pleasure in her life was enjoying it. I'll always encourage people to read!

Perhaps this list is an indication of the fashion of popular fiction from a retailing viewpoint.
It's not a true indication of of "romance" or "all time". In 5 years I doubt this list would be recognisable.
I think the phrasing of the title is perhaps misleading. A classic is a classic, but I enjoy something easy and light as well. I just wish that editors put more time into some of the more recent publications. I really hate having to scan the spelling and grammar just to make it through a story.
However, given I'm writing this on my smartphone, my comment probably needs editing- difficult when I can only see a part of the screen- so apologies!

message 131: by Shruti (new)

Shruti M this list is highly questionable.
fifty f***ing shades!!!.....seriously??!!
didn't bother to go any further..

message 132: by Erin (new)

Erin I'm sitting here staring blanking at my screen wondering how a piece of smut that's just a fanfiction with different character names is placed above a classic. Wow, GR. Just wow.

It's not GR, It's the people that voted for it.

Kate This list is just painful to look at...

message 135: by grimple (new)

grimple ᵔᴥᵔ Fifty Shades of Gray should not even be on this list.
Or on this website.
Or published.

message 136: by MomToKippy (new)

MomToKippy Can't someone edit this list? Some people don't understand what romance is evidently.

message 137: by Rania (new)

Rania yousife good list , yet, i cant see why you guys like fifty shades of gray , i read the first 40 pages i guess and i felt sick , come on guys , it wasnt worth reading it . i cant talk about it so the fans wont " eat" me , but still , i dont get what you liked in it , over all . the majority are cool , i loved reading them , i guess i also need time to reread them !!

message 143: by Atinuke (new)

Atinuke M. Something tells me this list is dominated by pre-teens who have no conception of romance or good literature... let me rephrase that pre-teens and their moms who are just so desperate for escape that they don't care anymore

message 144: by Sofia (new)

Sofia Lazaridou I have read all the comments and I have come to some conclusions. Obviously all of you are the mature ones and none of you is under 30. 2) You are all prejudiced. Yeah only teenagers vote here. Only teenagers have read FFoG. 3) Wuthering Heights is NOT romance, but no one has said anything about it. 4) Consensual BDSM is not abuse. Go back to your vanilla lives and don't comment on any BDSM book again. A spanking is not abuse. 5) You have read the book so please don't try to be high and mighty. 6) I have no idea what's your idea about romance, but it not always pretty. Please don't tell me that you expect the hero to be perfect and bring flowers to the girl.

Jessica Sofia wrote: "4) Consensual BDSM is not abuse. Go back to your vanilla lives and don't comment on any BDSM book again. A spanking is not abuse.

BDSM swear by SSC: Safe, sane and consensual. Their BDSM was not any of this. EL James does not know BDSM. This book is an insult to the culture and makes BDSM look like abuse. Why insult people who don't like it by thinking they don't like BDSM or are saying it's abusive? No one said that.
