In recent years, we have seen a massive upswing in populist movements and tribalistic behavior, largely in response to globalization, loss of cultural identities, and rapidly changing social institutions.

While levels of violence have decreased globally, culture wars rage on. Countries adopt stricter border laws. Governments burden people with tariffs and limit the movement of goods and services. Individuals are reduced to their membership in identity groups: race, class, sexual orientation, sex, gender, religion, country of origin, and political orientation. We live in our preferred echo chambers. The free exchange of ideas and culture are too often mislabeled as appropriation. Local or regional identities are crowded out by the hegemony of Globalization.

Tribalism is the human condition. We're social creatures. Additionally, individualism is one of the greatest advancements of the past 500 years. How do we respect the autonomy of individuals while reaping the benefits of community? How can we reap the benefits of community while minimizing the barriers we build between communities?

Surely some forms of social cohesion and identity are superior to others. How can we find peace and tolerance in a global world while preserving unique and conflicting cultural identities?
