message 1: by Mely (new)

Mely Why is the Warriors series not here? :( Erin Hunter

message 2: by Cutebabys (new)

Cutebabys *agrees* Warriors is good, but I still don't think it's the best. One of the best, definitely, but I don't think it'll win.

message 3: by Natasha (new)

Natasha I tried to put most in order, but it was way too hard, after 15 or so they are all pretty much the same. All are awesome! hehe

message 4: by Lily (new)

Lily they were all pretty good, but i would have hoped to see "A Series of Unfortunate Events" in there, as it reminds me so much of my childhood.

message 5: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie I hope you don't mind me voting and adding to this.

message 6: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Some people have added every title in the series, which is unnecessary.

message 7: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Lots of non-series on here, plus superfluous titles in addition to the first.

message 8: by Heather (new)

Heather The Tales of Beedle the Bard is not a series. It's more like a one time spin off.

message 9: by Cassidy (new)

Cassidy yes it would be much better if you take out all the repetitive books

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Caitlin Kittredge's 'Black London' series is definitely list-worthy, and I agree with Lily; 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' should definitely have a spot here (although the ending was disappointing). Over all, a pretty good list, a large portion seems to be dark fantasy.

message 11: by Lee (new)

Lee Why is this list tagged non fiction?

message 12: by Breanne (new)

message 13: by Breanne (new)

Barry Pierce The Discworld series should be way higher than where it is! It definitely beats crappy "Twilight"!

Kat (Lost in Neverland) Warriors for BEST SERIES IN THE WORLD!!

gunne "Why is this list tagged as adult? Like 90% of these are for children/teens. Or for people with no brain cells *coughtwilightcoughliterallyworstbookofalltime*"

While I do agree with you that Twilight isn't even one quarter near good literature, I created this list with the intent to celebrate good series, regardless of whether they were intended for kids, young adults, or adults. Unfortunately, as you can probably see, a huge percentage of goodreads' population consist of teens/tasteless readers, and because the list is based on votes, I can't delete Twilight and other undeserving books from it, what with respecting other's opinions and such. If it makes you feel better, I didn't put the option of Twilight when I started the list. :D

People also have a habit of not listening to the instructions, in which I mentioned only to post the first book of the series to represent said series. I have tried deleting replicas, non-first-books and box sets, but the list is over 9 pages long, and it takes up waaay too much time. I appreciate all the votes of course, but this list is dependent on voting, and there's nothing much I can do about it.

As for The Host being a trilogy, it apparently is, if Goodreads is to be trusted:

http://www.goodreads.com/series/46642...

Also from Wikipedia:

"She said in an interview that, if published, the first sequel would be entitled The Soul and the second The Seeker. In November 2009, she said, "I'd like to eventually have The Host be part of a trilogy." In a Q&A session in Kansas City, Meyer stated that she has outlines for the sequels, but she has not decided whether she will write them since The Host universe is a "dangerous place" where characters might die, and she is not sure if she wants to kill them off."

message 20: by Laura (last edited Apr 02, 2012 11:55PM) (new)

Laura I started deleting books that weren't first in a series, but it's super late and I didn't finish. I'll try again tomorrow...

message 21: by Karisma (new)

Karisma Collins M

♥ Rebecca ♥ Its silly how many books are on this list that are the only one released in the series. You cant know if the series will be good as a whole yet.

message 23: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan Schwarz Why are there stand-alones in a list about series!?

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Love. Just thinking the same thing. Plenty of people out there who don't read kids' books. Jesus, I hated being a teenager--why would I want to read about it?

message 25: by Abby (new)

Abby Lebel The book mistwood is the best! not even joking.
it appeals to YA and it has an element of fantasy mixed in... check it out

I haven't read it...gonna add it to my "to read" list...thanks Mely :)

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Charli wrote: "Stacy wrote: "Is THE HOST even part of a series?"

Technically it is. The other books just have not been written yet

message 31: by Donna (last edited Jun 14, 2013 08:20PM) (new)

Donna Davis Removed for not being part of any series: The 3 Musketeers, by Dumas, and The Taming of the Shrew, by Shakespeare. Per request I have found and removed On the Road, p.4.

Questioning but have not touched because I am not familiar with these series:Belonging, p.3 (says "Temptation #2"...are we to assume anything marked with a # other than 1 is out, or are some of them separate and distinct in some other way? Trying to be careful here!) Also on p.4, "Seduced in the Dark" (Dark Duet #2) and Ascend (Trylle Trilogy #3).

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Donna, Three Musketeers IS part of a series. The others are Twenty Years After and The Vicomte of Bragelonne.

message 33: by Donna (new)

Donna Davis "The Vicomte de Bragelonne opens an epic adventure which continues with Louise de la Valliere and reaches its climax in The Man in the Iron Mask. This new edition is the only one in print and is fully annotated with an introduction that sets Dumas's saga in its historical and cultural context."--this is from Amazon.com.

I am going to leave the rest of the list for others to edit.

message 34: by gunne (last edited Jun 15, 2013 01:04AM) (new)

gunne It's quite easy to tell if books are part of a series or not. Just click on the title and look for a grey bracket indicating any #s next to the title. Anything without a bracket, or with a number other than #1 probably does not belong. That's how I do it anyway. Going by this, Jonathan's right about the Three Musketeers being a series.

(Note that not all the titles on the listopia page reflect that they're part of a series, you need to click on the individual titles to confirm if they are.)

Exceptions: When chronological order contradicts publishing order
Example: The Hunt for Red October (Jack Ryan, #3) - Although #3 in chronological order, this book was published first in the series, so we'll leave it on the list for now.

"Its silly how many books are on this list that are the only one released in the series. You cant know if the series will be good as a whole yet."

I was reading old comments and this is a good point. However, if the author has plans for a series but has only published the first book, it should still be counted as being part of a series. It's true we won't be able to tell if it's any good, but then that's what votes are for.

To date, I have gone through all pages and deleted inappropriate titles, including box sets, stand alone titles, and non-first books. I have left some box sets because a) the series order is far too complex to discern which is Book 1, and b) far too many people have voted.

If anybody wants the list to be accurate, they'll have to play their part in adding the correct titles, because it takes forever to edit 1,000+ titles (Three hours, to be exact. Are you going to pay me by the hour? No? Quit bitching then.) The instructions are at the top of the list, and I trust that reading a few lines shouldn't cause anyone a fit since they're on a reading-related site to begin with.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Donna wrote: ""The Vicomte de Bragelonne opens an epic adventure which continues with Louise de la Valliere and reaches its climax in The Man in the Iron Mask. This new edition is the only one in print and is fu..." All three titles I mentioned are part of the Musketeer Saga. All three books feature D'Artangan and company. That qualifies it as a series.

Interdimensionalbeing I am quite tired of Harry Potter being on top or almost on top of most of the lists. It's a great series but there are better books!

It's a matter of opinion. Whoever started this list obviously disagrees with you. Don't let it bother you.

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (George Smiley, #5) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, (Harry Potter, #3), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter, #7) are obviously not the first books in the series and as such will be removed.
