Yeah... I think someone might have been confused as to how to use listopia. Anyone can vote books to the list, but a lot of times people get confused and add books that don't qualify...

For example, today I am removing The Storycatcher and Mayhem because both books have original publication dates in 2013. Most of the ones I removed the other day were older. Twilight and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and a bunch more I don't remember. Hate taking books down, but I'm also not of fan of lists that have a bunch of random unrelated titles.

Yeah, if you look at the top 10, only 3 or maybe 4 of them are general historical fiction - the rest are all Christian fiction. Compare that to the 2013 HF list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

I understand what you are saying and yes, my original intent was that this list be strictly straight-up historic fiction, but those lines get blurred and people define sub-genres differently. For example, I consider Elizabeth Chadwick & Philippa Gregory historical fiction writers, but both have works listed as historical romance on Goodreads. Where do you draw the line when perception is so varied?

And more than that, how do you enforce those definitions once established? I am daily removing books from this list, mostly from authors attempting self-promotion despite the fact that their books do not meet the 2014 requirement and that is a pretty cut and dry issue. :/

Hi Erin, I'd just like to offer my apologies. A friend added my book, WHAT SHE LEFT BEHIND, because my publisher, Kensington, considers it a January 2014 release even though it comes out Dec. 31st. They always release the last Tuesday of the month before the official release date, and this year the last Tuesday happens to fall on the last day of the year. Sorry for the confusion.

These lists are intended to be communal and fun and to help users find interesting reading material. I agree that adding strict criteria defeats the purpose of the listopia community.

That being said, I find it problematic that the majority of the books in the top 20 are more "genre fiction" than historical fiction. I'm not sure if certain people or groups are just being more vocal or demonstrative in voting. But personally, I'm just finding it hard to find useful content since so many of the current results fit into subgenres like Christian fiction.

Hi Ellen. Thank you for the apology, it is appreciated but entirely unnecessary. I didn't mean to sound as if I was targeting authors. I've had a lot of well-meaning and over enthusiastic fans posting too. GR lists the voters in order so it is easy to tell who added a particular book. I am even guilty of adding a few titles scheduled for a late 2013 release, so I would hazard to say some don't even realize their vote doesn't qualify. The last few days have simply seen a lot of the former group and I've become somewhat discouraged trying to maintain the list. You and any author I may have inadvertently offended have my sincere apologies.

That being said if you are an author and you are excited about your own 2014 book, VOTE IT UP! And don't be ashamed about it. You have every right to cast that vote.

I'm not sure I would call them all bodice rippers, particularly as several of the christian titles have absolutely no explicit content, but to each his own.

Perhaps you might address the deficiencies by voting up those titles you feel do qualify as historical fiction.

Hannibal: Enemy of Rome and Sewing Can Be Dangerous are both gone, but I'm hesitant to remove The Nature of Fire until we know more.

There might be a historic story line, something like what Anne Fortier did in The Lost Sisterhood, and I don't want to make that call until we can confirm one way or the other.
