Classic Science Fiction - 1980-1989
Best Sci-Fi of the 1980's
This list is for Science Fiction only. When this list was originally created it was expected to have both Fantasy and Science Fiction. However there are pretty good fantasy specific lists that should be used instead. As a librarian when questioning a particular book, look at how it's shelved. If it's shelved at least 20% as science fiction, call it out on the discussion rather than deleting.

Although I added my votes, as the book was already on the list, I don't think The Handmaid's Tale is either.

I strongly consider Handmaid's Tale science fiction. But then again I prefer the term speculative fiction. What is clear is that it is not fantasy. It is shelved on goodreads as follows - 7k fiction, 3.8k classics, 3k dystopian, 1.9k sci-fi.

I don't, obviously :-) For me, science-fiction is something else. In The Handmaid's Tale there no science in the fiction, as far as I'm concerned. But feel free to have a different opinion, of course.

it apparently was #92 and had 2 votes. It has been removed.
