Steven Slightly ambiguous question? I think you are asking if we read more modern 'writers' as opposed to 'titles'. Alan Furst is a modern writer writing of a classic period of espionage (pre WW2). I'd include Le Carre as a modernist in this sense too, writing of his times at the time and with a realistic rather than romantic slant.

While to me Eric Ambler, Joseph Conrad, John Buchan are the classic writers.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
