Do you like books that end with a cliffhanger when they are part of a series?

No. I like each book to feel like it's own story, but building off the previous books.

Yes! It makes me really want to read the next book.

Andrea Sometimes I like a cliffhanger. But only when I don't have to wait months before the next book comes out.

Brooke Banks I hate cliffhangers that end in the middle of something, like a battle or with someone almost dead. Those heavy cliff hangers where I have to wait for the next book irritate me. Especially for books I love and get attached too, it drives me up the wall not knowing.

Of course, if I have the whole series and don't have to wait for the story to continue then I'm usually okay with it.

message 3: by Cary (new)

Cary If it's a single book cliffhangers are OK. The whole point of a series is to carry it to it's conclussion.

message 4: by Brian (new)

Brian Benson hmm...yes, if one knows there is a definite conclusion in site.

message 5: by A.F. (new)

A.F. It depends on the cliffhanger and the book. If they're both well-written, then I like the suspense, but if it feels like a gimmick or a cheat then no. And if the book sucks, no cliffhanger will get me to read the next one.

A.L. Harris For first books in a series, I think it's valid to have a harsh cliffhanger. For books that are later in a series I think it's fine, but in the cases that it's a soft cliffhanger or a cliffhanger that is really well done. Sometimes I think writers use cliffhangers because they don't know how to end a book.

Cathiecaffey Good question! I like a book to have its HEA ending if its a novel length. The exceptions would be serial books since they are done in parts to the full book. Then where its usually not going to have that exact HEA (HEA means Happily Ever After) like in Urban Fantasy. The reason why is I can't think of the huge number of books that authors and or publishers didn't finish and leave us in a bind. Example, Brenda Joyce's DEADY series (Cadler and Bradd dilemia). Her first pub didn't finish them, then she went to HQN and they let her do a couple and that series is in the air right now. Too much left open at the ends. So sometimes with books that will be trilogies, I wait til they are all out, because I know they are just books, but to me, they are real reads and worthy and I'd like to be able to read the whole series.

message 8: by Shar (new)

Shar Sometimes, but only if I have the next book to dip into straight away, otherwise no

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I said sometimes because if the next book isn't coming out for a while or if I have to wait to get it I get increasingly curious. But cliff hangers are super fun when you have the next book and you can jump right in and continue to be lost in wonder.
